LED LCD--Variations and Versions.

I am a little bit confused as to what all these new LED LCD's have compared to one another. I hear a lot about the XBR9 and Samsng A950's, but what about the Samsung series 6 and 7. Also I heard that Sony had an LED XBR7 ( or maybe it was eight) last year. I tried to go into my local bestbuy and ask some questions but I get a lot of varying responses as to what it actually is all about. The net seems to do an ok job, but what is it about these LCD's that make them so special. Also, what make and models do you guys ( or gals ) recommend.

One more thing, for the ppl who have actually seen an LED in action ( FULL HD blu-ray ) how would you compare it to a top of the line 1080p 120 or 240 hz LCD ( non LED ). Is it really worth the extra chunk of cash?

The XBR8 is Trilumunious Full LED Backlit, the new Samsung LED's are LED Edge Lit.
LED is still a growing technology, the LED Edge lit in my opinion will replace Single Color Backlit LCD, and Full LED or Trimlunious LED will replace Wide Color Backlit TV's...eventually.
IMHO stick with LCD for now or wait for LED to come down in price, unless your are stupid rich.

There are multiple tvs that use LED's but how they use them is different.
Sony XBR8 and Samsung A950 use LED local dimming. Which means there a bunch of LED groups that can adjust their brightness according to the lighting in the scene. If its a dark scene they only light up in the spaces where backlighting is needed. These are the pinnacle of LCD technology approaching plasma color quality with LCD brightness.
The XBR8 also uses three different color LED's. letting it add more depth to the colors by using colored light to backlight.

The new Samsung 6000 and 7000 series are edge lit LED which means the LED surround the edge of the tv and project light inwards. Making a bright picture but uneven lighting and uneven blacks. Sony also has an edge lit LED but i don't know the series. Samsung and sony will probably release new models with local dimming sometime this summer.

XBR10 which MAY be a replacement for the XBR8 is slated for Fall release.

The edge lit led lcds are about as good as high end ccfl lcds. Ive seen the samsung luxia 600(same pq as 7000 series) multiple times side by side with the b650 and there is zero differences. Now that could possibly change in an all dark room but at my store they are the same pq. I honestly think cnet was paid to rate the luxia 7000 number 2 on their all time list. Dave katzmaier(sp?) didnt seem too enthused about it either but somehow its second. I personally think theyre overpriced and would only take the 950 or xbr8 if i had to get an led lcd.
