A while back, we covered a film called OUTLANDER. Our coverage ultimately waned because, well, the film itself actually went away (in a sense).

See, OUTLANDER was (erroneously) deemed to be little more than straight-to-video fodder by The Weinstein Company here in The States, where it's already seen a highly limited theatrical distribution (backed by an almost non existent promotional campaign). Many people were/are simply unaware of the film. Statistically, those who know about it probably couldn't find it. OUTLANDER deserves better than this.

Such banishment is particularly odd given that the movie has performed reasonably well, if not quite nicely, when released to theaters overseas (by different distributors) - Spain, France, and India being examples.

The next leg of OUTLANDER's journey begins on UK screens this weekend. Accordingly, we thought we'd give our readers across the pond a heads up. Apparently the film is enjoying a fully realized advertising blitz in UK, so chances are you may've already learned a bit about it. But in case you haven't...

OUTLANDER is the tale of a dude in a spaceship (Jim Caviezel) who crashes on Earth - bringing a gnarly extraterrestrial bioluminescent hell beast with him. This thing looks kinda like a Balrog cross-bred with FORBIDDEN PLANET's ID monster. Space Guy ends up in a town of Vikings...takes 'em a while to figure each other out & navigate treacherous inter-tribal politics. Space Guy helps Vikings destroy the "dragon" (space monster) that's bent on eating them. Pretty simple, pretty straight forward. AND, it has John Hurt, Ron Perlman, and Sophia Miles.

This said, OUTLANDER's B-movie concept is often overshadowed by A-caliber sensibilities. Director Howard McCain isn't afraid to take on character development of sometimes surprising dimension; our hero cries at one point, and isn't as squeaky clean as he'd like to be. He's...done things. Things for which he, and others, are paying a very high price.

People behave like people here, usually manifesting nobility, uncertainty, illogic (or all of the above) in very believable ways.

The evil space monster's actions have specific motivation and provocation - it's not just a CGI retread hopping around, looking for snacks.

One of the film's most memorable moments? Spaceman (Caviezel) is tied up in the middle of the Viking village. Nobody cares and most are ignoring him. A Viking boy wanders along - stands there staring at him. And there's this interesting tension. About what? Whether that kid is gonna flake off a piece of the bread he's carrying & toss it to Caviezel as if he's a stray dog. A simple, quiet moment that works on many different levels - told primarily through eye contact and reaction shots. OUTLANDER works nicely as an adventure, but its heart and soul are what many may recall most vividly when all is said and done.

We'll be taking a much closer look at this film as it approaches DVD release here in the U.S. next month, which might be the beginning of a healthy video afterlife for OUTLANDER. Or perhaps even a complete rebirth?

Hahah wow, thanks Jason!!! I just watched the trailer and I am excited! I think this is the first Viking movie to actually be set in Norway that I've seen and I noticed when the gates open it truly is modeled after the Viking village set up in a perfect circle and fortified. Now if this movie has viking sea battles, this might be the greatest viking movie I've ever seen!!

I have absolutely no idea how I have never heard of this movie before. I wondered what happened to Caviezel. I think Passion was the last time I saw him. I am a huge huge fan of Viking lore and history, basically the only books I read involve Vikings and Nordic mythos But to finally see a viking movie which appears to have a lot of accuracies about their way of life, really gets me amped up for this. Not to mention RON PERLMAN as a viking!!! WAR PERLMAN!!!

Considering all the historical productions and shows that HBO has put out in the past from things like Deadwood and Rome and Adams and the likes obviously HBO likes to do mini-series or tv shows that cover history, so why not go with a show about Vikings? That would be awesome and brutal and could probably find an audience and I can't image it being as expensive to make as the other titles mentioned because everything would be made of Wood and straw and grass and water. So except for maybe the occasional sea battle, I couldn't forsee a Viking show being that expensive to make.

I think that would be amazing. Expensive but Amazing.

I have seen it. I wouldn't say it's the greatest movie in the world but it was definitely interesting. Well worth at least a rent. I really enjoyed the concept.

I dunno i thought it was a great sci-fi viking hack and slash movie, most likely will pick it up when it comes to blu bargain bins

Great! I was lucky enough to catch this at the theater. I'll definitely add this to my collection.

I just saw the DVD version of the movie. Fantastic is a great way to describe it. The acting, story, characters were all well done. My expectations were kinda low when I bought the DVD used at blockbuster, but wow did the movie impress me. This may be my best blind buy yet.

I was really hoping for a making of feature with the DVD but there isn't one, it's a real shame. It'd be great to know more about the shooting and how they made the movie. I'd like to get this on blu-ray, but after reading all the threads about the Canadian version (OAR), I'll wait for a US release.

Fans of Beowulf, Predator, 13th warrior or any scifi/fantasy fan should really give this disc a rent.

I don't know how old these posts are, but a Blu-Ray release for this movie is currently not scheduled for the US. There is a UK release this September, but I can't tell yet if it'll be region-free or not (the Blu-Ray.com product page says no ).

Still, another article here mentioned that Weinstein's movies may be distributed via Universal in the near future. If that's the case, then maybe we'll see "Outlander" on Blu-Ray.

Anyway, this movie is pretty slick; reminds me of some of the sci-fi/fantasy flicks we used to see throughout the 80s. I'd definitely want to get it.

Canadian version isn't OAR
Swedish version audio is only 5.1 DD

So yeah, I'll be waiting for a proper release.

I consider it a good movie but it came out ONLY on DVD in states.. NOT BLU? but is on BLU in many parts of the world.. The company in charge of this are a bunch of idiots.

When you think of all the garbage movies released to movie theathers here in US and they don't even bother with this movie... crazy.

Still waiting for it to come out on BLU.

For those that haven't seen it yet, Ron Perlman plays an awesome part in the movie.



Any chance for a sequel, the ending did surprise me a bit

This sounds pretty interesting to me. I think I'll put it on my Netflix queue. Hopefully if it's as good as people are saying it is they will release it on blu.
