Thank you for the info on what Oldboy was finished on, I'd have thought it was way too early for a DI on a non-American feature but obviously I'm mistaken and the technology was more widespread. But, funnily enough, you actually now have your answer: all those bits you're moaning about were most likely lifted directly from the DI - it being an early one, so it wasn't amazing - while they transferred everything without VFX etc from the "original camera negative" hence the obvious visual disparity between 2003 tech vs 2019 tech. There's no conspiracy here, guy. If anything it's very unusual that a movie finished to a DI gets a 4K rebuild from the OG negative at all, I'm surprised there wasn't way more more hoopla about it on Oldboy as it's practically unheard of outside of Sony having done it on a few movies e.g. Hellboy, Talladega Nights, Bad Boys II. And guess what? Sony ALSO upscale the titles, VFX etc from the 2K masters when doing these 4K rebuilds, it's just easier. In fact, if you go into the Bad Boys II thread you'll find someone else going off on one because they thought the whole movie was an upscale (not that you did, I'm just making a point). Why? Because the end credits look like junk compared to the rest of it...having been upscaled from the 2003 DI. |

Sorry to interject on this great debate, but if one has either the Canadian Vengeance Trilogy set, or the excellent Arrow release (I have the latter), I highly suggest watching the behind the scenes videos on the CG and compositing of the film. Once I saw what was CG via those videos, I can never not watch the film and not think, "yeah, that's CG." For 2003 it's quite good, but even on the 1080p Arrow disc, those shots stand out like a sour thumb.
In addition, the commentaries with Park Chan Wook are very informative, and goes into greater detail on the look of the film (including the bleach bypass technique heavily used in late 90s and early 2000s films- outside of Oldboy, probably the most well known example is Fincher's Seven). |

I watched the first 30 minutes or so in iTunes (4K / Dolby Vision). It looks great in parts but some scenes looked looks hazy and soft due to optics.Tiny white specks can be seen in few scenes. There is some weird banding on actors faces in couple of scenes. I need to watch the Arrow Blu-ray to see if it looks any different which I doubt it will.

Just to get your opinions. The steel book is going for around $50. I am in the US without a region-free player, so I cannot get the Arrow BD. Do you think I should go ahead and buy the 4K steel book or do you guys suspect Arrow will soon release it in 4K?
