Default Pioneer 5020 and 6020

How much do u think i can get one of these for? I went into best buy today, and they had the store dispaly model 5020 marked down to 2,099... good price or no. It had little scratches on the side panel just from being on display, but other then that it was fine.

And opinions on these? I want the 111, but i just think its too expensive for me. Im looking to spend more like 2,000 range

BB had the 5020 , new for $1,999 & that was as low as they have ever had it. What's f-up is the display model was $2,099... Makes no sense huh!?!? Anyway the 5020 is one of the finest displays out, (anyone who tells you different does not own one) will love it for years to come. I use my 5020 more than my 111FD & 151FD. Go figure...

I find this comment very interesting. Why do you use your 5020 more? I thought the 111 and 151's were clearly superior.

The Elites are better displays in a couple of areas. My 5020 has always put up better numbers (black level 0.000fL, & an ANSI contrast ratio of 16,800.1) then both Elites. I have enjoyed it just as much as the Elites if not more. I could, & have, swaped out my 111 for my 5020 & end up swapping it back. I just enjoy the 5020 better in the HT setup...

Wow, very interesting! So how do you have your 5020 set up? Do you view it in a completely dark room? I know in CNET's review they say it has inaccurate primary colors and that you cannot make anywhere near the adjustments to the picture that you can on the 111's. Were you somehow able to dial in the colors more accurately or is the difference negligable enough to not even be concerned with?

I've seen the 5020 at work and I really didnt see that much of the inaccuracy in the primary colors as some make it out to be. Now if you have the 5020 and 111FD [havent seen them side by side in action] side by side it might be different but from what I recall Sonny telling me when I was deciding on whether to go with the 5020 or the 111FD there isnt much of a difference discernible.

So yeah in a nutshell it seems to be negligible.

I thought the cnet review was sad for both kuros. They looked terrible. On "paper" is the only real way one would know about the color "issue". I would not own a 5020 if the greens & reds were NEON!! I have had both the 5020 & 111 side by side & that is the only way I and a large % of people could see the difference between the two. Some people claim they can see the difference right away...they just don't normaly own either, or even one of them & baise there findings on looking at the displays at Best Buy for a few minutes. Even then it is very close. If you are trying to pick one over the other & $$$ is not a problem, I'd get the 111. The 5020 should not be looked down at as a crap TV just because it doesn't sport an Elite badge.

I do view the 5020 in a "dark room". Really that's the way any TV/BD showed be viewed. I know it's not possible for everyone to create that kind of setting , though.
These are just my opinions & observations , having spent lots of time with many grade 'A' displays & HDTV's.

I'm not an owner of Kuro sadly, but I've been looking at them a lot at a Best Buy Magnolia store, and the difference between the Elites and non-Elites was extremely small. I think Cnet likes to scrutinize the more expensive products a lot more closely which is reasonable. I mean you are paying a premium for these sets. The differences came up in test equipment, but you will be hard pressed to actually see them without them being side by side. Even then the differences will be minimal. The 5020FD is a pretty accurate set overall and everything looks very natural. Its an excellent set only topped by the Elites and that's mostly due to the Elites having more adjustments.

Plasmas don't have that problem since their response time is so fast. LCD's response times are in milliseconds while plasmas are at a fraction of a millisecond. If you are concerned about flicker in regards to 24p performance then there are no worries with Pioneer plasmas. They perform flawlessly in this regard.

No way, no how would I pay $2,100 for display model, especially with scratches. Who knows how many hours that thing has on it at this point. As was mentioned it was selling for $2k new a bit back. Someone even posted in a thread somewhere they got a 5020 new in the box from BB for $1,499. They checked the inventory for the district they were in and there as a crap load of them still available.

Hold out for new!

I bought the dislpay from my store [the day before I gave my 2 weeks notice], and I was extremely hesitant to do so for several. As nugent mentioned, who knows how long that set has been on. Well, in this case, I did know, and it was around 11 months at about 100 hours a week, which is huge. When I calculated it, I'm buying a 5 year old TV.

But I justified it this way:
1) When it had come in 11 months ago, I set it up myself. It never sat in Dynamic mode, other than when someone decided to put it in dynamic, and I'd change it back.
2) It was running off a 16x9 feed 95% of its time on the shelf, and it was at least a month, so almost 400 hours, before a blu-ray player was hooked to it. Basically, I know the phosphors have been worn fairly evenly.
3) There was absolutely no damage to the screen, the bezel, or any visible part of the TV. That was kind of awesome, but had a lot to do with the fact that after I set it up, it was never moved.
4) I have a year's warranty from date of purchase. Once it has been about 11 months, I can schedule for a tech to come in and make sure there are no major issues (I think cleaning the dust inside is all that will need to be done), and then once the warranty expires I don't think I will really need to worry, since the TV will have lots left in her.
5) The store I worked at had industrial grade power filtering equipment (I don't know if that's the norm, I just know we had it), so I know that the power supply has never had any jolts or brownouts.

So basically, had any of these elements not been present, I probably wouldn't have gone for it. The biggest reason was the price, but again, I wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't known its whole history, which unfortunately the OP doesn't.

I just read about it here,
http://forums.highdefdigest.com/home...y-1500-bb.html

Take it for what it's worth but the person that posted it has almost 9k post on HDD forum. He did say it was a haggle deal. So no, you didn't miss the memo since one, to my knowledge, has never been advertised for $1,499.

I did however just purchase a 5010 for under $1,500 delivered via Sam's Club auctions.

Thumbs up

I'd have to see it too believe it. I don't care how many post someone has on the HDD forum... I could see "his friend" getting the 5020 for $1,499 if he bought 4-5k worth the gear on top of the TV (maybe), but not out-right? The price is already so low, for BB to knock off 25% of there lowest price so far is worth a round of aplause. This person should of got the 111FD for $2,000!!!!!

Oh I totally agree with you! I would have to see a scanned receipt. I just found it interesting to say the least.

I'm sorry if I came off rude, that was not my intent. I would wish everyone to get a 5020 for that price!!
