Default Complaint about my Blu-ray player not retaining start-up position when paused/stopped

Let me begin with that blue-ray movies have the best quality picture and sound so far.

However I discoverd a fault on several blue-ray disc on which my bloodpressure starts to rise.

For example, I played the movie "Gandhi" yesterday for the first time and after 2 hours and 14 min I stopped the player for a short while to do something else after I returned to continue the movie by pressing start on my remote it did'nt started at the point mentioned above but at the beginning of the Sony's logo and their blue-ray preview. In other words I had to wait or go to the main menu to select scene selection to find the proper scene to continue.

With a normal dvd is an other story each time you stop playing anywhere in the movie and want to resume it always starts at the point you have left.

Why can't they do the same option for blue-ray?

At this moment as far as I know there are two moviecompany's handle this awful habit namely Sony pictures with "Gandhi" and 20th century fox with "The Robe".

Does anyone of you know where I can file a complain?

Many thanks.

Sincerely yours,
Egbert1234

Movies with BD-Java don't have the feature to return where you belong and use a bookmark feature instead where you manually bookmark where you left off but Blu-ray movies that don't have BD-Java can do it automatically(or at least it does on my PS3).

Yes, and if he had read the inserts inside the case he would have known this. Universal titles are the same way.

you've just brought up one of the most unappealing features of blu-ray
discs. Unfortunately, MOST blu rays have the java feature on the disc
(which for me is worthless since I have no intention of using internet
functions)

There are a few older titles that can resume play after stopping but less and less new ones.

Get in the habit of hitting pause for bathroom breaks, answering the phone, etc

Yeah, i'm really put out by having to press the pause button. I know some discs/players allow you to hit stop and then resume where you left off, but since the word pause is technically the more appropriate description for what you're wanting to accomplish, why wouldn't it be obvious to use that function instead of using the STOP function, which by definition means the opposite of what you're wanting to accomplish?

It is possible for BD-Java titles to resume play, but I believe that capability must be specifically accounted for in the authoring---at least, I recall reading something to that effect in one of the insider's threads a year and a half ago...

Anyway, the new A Bug's Life gave me a message to the effect of "This film has been viewed before; do you want to start where you left off?"

Maybe if you bought Blu-ray's instead of Blue-ray's they would work.

Yea Its your player settings, has nothing to do with discs. My Sony retains playback position when paused however the Samsung does not

He's not talking about resuming the movie when paused. He's referring to being able to press stop and then come back in where he left off. I would assume pressing pause, regarless of BD or BD player, would solve the "problem."

Yeah I wish they would make that better, pain in the ass trying to remember where I was in a movie. Hopefully a PS3 update coming this year will solve this problem.

You need to re-read the problem. So, what you are saying is YOU leave your movies on PAUSE for days on end?

I agree with the OP. It's a little problem that I can overlook, but it is annoying sometimes. If you want to stop a movie and watch it later, you can do that with DVD because it picks up where you left off. Blu-ray on the other hand does not. It starts all over again from the beginning. I don't keep my movies on pause when I leave the house or want to watch something else. I stop them and turn off the player. That's the issue at hand.

Not putting the movie on pause. Please read before you type.

I friggin hate BJ discs. Resume play is a must. They have this advanced capability disc and that is one thing they make WORSE. It is one thing (and annoying) with movies, but with TV series (like Heroes) it is a frigging nightmare.

The OP's first post says, and i quote,"I STOPPED the player FOR A SHORT WHILE." Nowhere in this entire thread did he, I, or anyone else say anything about leaving our players on pause for days at a time. I think the OP has a continuity issue and I completely understand that. Get up for a drink or bathroom break and comeback to the movie only to find you have to get back to where you were; it kinda takes you outta the movie. For that situation the pause button works wonders. Now the situation you're proposing is completely different. Your saying that sometimes you stop a movie before finishing it and come back the next day, or several days later only to find the movie isn't in the same spot. Well whoopty doo. Guess what? You've already ruined the continuity of the movie by not finishing it one sitting, so having to go back to where you were isn't that big of a deal IMO. At that point you should just re-watch the whole thing or find a better/more memorable stopping point the night before.
So put that in your snooty little pipe and smoke it, Mr.Snooty.

Again, you failed to read what I posted and I guess, what everyone else posted. Seems other people here don't have a problem understanding the OP. You on the other hand must not be getting it which is apparent by your posts and lack of common decency towards other members. No need to be a dick because you don't understand the OP.

This may be the first BD-Java disc that does this. I agree- it has to be authored in somewhere I would think, and then your player would have to have memory to store it. Any flick without BD-J would be able to resume without issue as long as the player supports it, but to my knowledge none can do BD-J discs currently. (Though again, assuming Joe's not pulling our collective legs, they're coming.)

What exactly don't i understand? That we need a firmware update because you and the OP can't press the pause button? Yeah, you're right, i don't understand that.
Sorry, my dickishness was in response to your perceived snootiness.

No leg-pulling. It caught me quite by surprise, especially since it didn't simply resume, iut gave me the choice of resuming or starting over at the beginning.

I dug up Talk's relevant post from last year:
