Name a film regarded as Smut but is actually good!

I'll start with Paul Verhoeven's Basic Instinct. Verhoeven has made some of my all time favorite films.

I guess you could call it a neo noir. The high tension chemistry between Douglas and Stone elevates this movie. It stinks that Stone seems to have regrets about the film and "certain" scenes, as she absolutely killed her performance. Its lewd, trashy, and tantalizing. This one is on the Mount Rushmore of Erotic Thrillers for me.

I'd like to hear about some more good ones.

Anyone know when this comes to 4k in the US?

Basic Instinct is a Hollywood feature. Smut is defined as a motion picture made for the sole purpose of self-gratification, aka porn. I don't watch porn for the stories so I can't come up with anything

I really like a couple of early films that received single X ratings, namely THE BABYSITTER (1969) and SANDRA-THE MAKING OF A WOMAN (1970). They were considered porn upon first release, but had decent stories and gorgeous actresses in the lead roles.

Harry Novak's THE TOY BOX (1972) might have been X-rated. It had more going for it than just porn content.

Barry Mahon made a ton of nudie flicks, most of them pretty bad. However, his A GOOD TIME WITH A BAD GIRL (1967) was much better than expected. The cast includes an uncredited John Beck as "Cowboy."

Flesh Gordon 2, it's a great parody of Flash Gordon and a fun adventure.

But Kite and Mezzo Forte ARE smut. I enjoy them too, but lets not kid ourselves. The sex doesn't need to be that explicit. It's hentai in an action noir (comedy for Mezzo).

Oh wow, didn't know Kite is now on Blu-ray. Time to rewatch it.

The Hot Spot is not great, but it is a good film.

I’m told The Colour of Night is awful, I haven’t seen it since I was just a kid but I recalled it being good then, the plot seemed scary to young eyes. Haven’t revisited as an adult but they tell me it’s trash, so I dunno.

no, everyone knows mezzo forte's sex scenes were a contractual obligation, watch the international (sex-less) version and it flows seamlessly. The same goes sorta for Kite, it did get adapted into a (horrible) live action movie, ya know? clearly it has a strong foundation for story, not just the smut. Although "kite" is pretty much "leon: the professional" gone AWRY anyways.
