Default Significant HITACHI Blu-ray announcement that will be unveiled tomorrow?

17:09 David mentions BD's great support from consumer electronics companies. He mentions that these companies provide HDTVs as well as BD players. He specifically mentions HITACHI, who promise a significant Blu-ray announcement that will be unveiled at their press conference tomorrow.

Does Hitachi make low-cost items?

Oh, I hope it's a cheap player. Come on, Hitachi. Big money, big money, no whammy....

I see no reason it wouldn't be a cheap player. BD needs one in the 1-2-300 dollar range...

Hitachi puts out some quality stuff, a few years ago they had some of the best rear-projection TVs...

If anything all these new MSRP $499 BD players will have to start competing with each other price wise, you'd think?

I'll be very surprised if they announce a player that's significantly cheaper than what we've got already.

I dont' think they will either. But they NEED to.

It's easy to sell cheap dud players. When it's rehashed last gen technology you tend to be able to save money.

We need something to compete.

Perhaps it's the Blu-ray camcorder:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ight=camcorder

The significant part would be that it's something that isn't available yet.

I hope it's a Profile 1.1 or 2.0 player for <$500 that's slated to ship before holiday 2007.

Recorder makes sense to me...

Remember... The BDA has one card up it's sleeve (at least) that they haven't played yet but alluded to in the presentation today.

Blu-ray is... RECORDABLE!!!!

HDDVD _is not_ recordable in a format that can playback through current HDDVD hardware. You can author them, but they are data storage only (or so I'm told). So, that would mean you can't record a movie/show/home video and play it back on your TV. You could only save some data and access it on your PC, allegedly.

I see the future BD players being not only playable, but recordable as well (just like VHS). I think it's just a matter of pricing right now holding it back.

This is a HUGE advantage for Blu-ray if it can materialize soon at a price point that can make it work. Talk about the best way to record your favorite shows and watch them later... unlimited storage potential and an entire market for blank media on a full market scale. Could be very big and would end the war very soon.

I suspect the BDA is holding back on this one while the technology gets the price on players down. Best they not start dropping high priced stuff right now in light of the FUD coming out of the HDDVD camp.

I think BD recorder. Hitachi has never really seemed to care too much about BD players, they are more on the BD recorder side. So my guess is a really nice BD/HDD recorder with CD/DVD support.

I didn't realize that hddvd didn't have recordable discs!!! That sucks for them, that is kinda HUGE!!!! I just never thought about it!!

Wow, hddvd truly is the lessor format, in so many ways!!!!

their 15min are about up!!!

The discs are still too expensive for a settop recorder to be practical

If they are releasing a player I doubt it will be cheap because that wouldn't introduce their new product only to loose money when the technology isn't there own. Interesting though
