Sony Pictures Walk on the Wild Side (1962) - September 14, 2021

Sony will be releasing Walk on the Wild Side (1962) on September 14th.

Quote:
Dove Linkhorn (Laurence Harvey, The Manchurian Candidate) shows up in New Orleans with drifter Kitty Twist (Jane Fonda, Barbarella) looking for his old flame, Hallie (Capucine, The Pink Panther). When Dove finds out that Hallie works at the Doll House, a bordello run by Jo (Barbara Stanwyck, Double Indemnity), Dove looks to take her away. But Jo and her cohorts have no intention of letting their star employee go without a fight. Directed by Edward Dmytryk (The Caine Mutiny) and featuring title credits designed by the legendary Saul Bass (Psycho).

This flick is only ok, but it does contain my all time favorite Saul Bass title sequence and since I purchase every release with Bass titles, it's mine.

Well, I guess that explains why Arrow is only releasing this in the UK.

Special Features: Theatrical Trailers
This should use the recent 4K restoration that showed up digitally on Amazon about a month ago. It is also getting released by Arrow in the UK in September:
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=28805

It looks like the original trailer will only be on the Sony blu-ray. If past Sony MOD blu-rays are any indication, it should be a new HD scan. It doesn't appear to be on YouTube but it can be viewed at the following website:
https://producerslibrary.com/preview/VT-0140_005

New trailer created by Movies! TV Network:

Saul Bass opening:

The theme song sung by Brook Benton was nominated for Best Original Song at that year's Oscars:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walk_o...ernstein_song)

The great score by Elmer Bernstein was given a commercial release:
https://www.discogs.com/Elmer-Bernst.../master/585932

It was released on CD in the "Elmer Bernstein - The Ava Collection" CD box set from Intrada:

Jane Fonda's amazing in this picture. Should have gotten a supporting actress nomination. But the award magnet phase of her career didn't start till seven years later with "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"'
I like the whole movie. It oozes with atmosphere. And - as noted - great title credits and theme song. Anne Baxter shows off a Latina accent, Richard Rust makes for one nasty villain and Barbara Stanwyck's as implacably charismatic as ever.

A quick comparison of the extras on the two upcoming blu-ray releases:

Arrow
  • Brand new commentary by critics Kat Ellinger and Samm Deighan
  • Brand new interview with historian and critic Richard Dyer
  • Brand new interview with Pat Kirkham, co-author of Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design
  • Archival interview with director Edward Dmytryk
  • Stills Gallery
Sony
  • Theatrical Trailers
The Movie Zyng listing for the Sony blu-ray says "Theatrical Trailers" (plural) which in the past has meant the blu-ray will have two trailers for the movie (the theatrical trailer and the teaser trailer) and both should be in HD.

It took a month for my pre-order to ship from Bull Moose but it was worth the wait because, as I guessed, it does include the teaser trailer and it's fantastic. Both it and the theatrical trailer are newly scanned in HD. A quick look at the blu-ray...

Menus

Movie
This is probably the same 4K restoration used for the Arrow blu-ray and available digitally because they all appeared around the same time.

Audio
  • English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0

Subtitles
  • English
  • French

Extras

Unfortunately, Sony's DVD didn't include any extras. But for this MOD blu-ray release, like the Good Neighbor Sam and Under The Yum-Yum Tree blu-rays, Sony has included not only the theatrical trailer but also the teaser trailer, both in HD.
  • Theatrical Trailer [03:08] (HD)

This is the same exact trailer that is on the Producers Library website:
    https://producerslibrary.com/preview/VT-0140_005

  • Teaser Trailer [01:25] (HD)

The teaser trailer probably hasn't been seen since 1962 and it's fantastic. Almost the entire teaser trailer is devoted to introducing the audience to Jane Fonda!

    Narrator:
    • "This girl is the daughter of a famous star."
    • "Look closely and you may see the resemblance."
    • "She will soon appear in Walk On The Wild Side in a role that will make her a star in her own right."
    • "These scenes are the proof..."

Ill probably get this from arrow mainly because of Capucine, jane fonda and the elmer bernstein score. Never cared much for laurence harvey, but I think the story was kind of interesting

Just a warning for those interested in the Wild Side (French studio) release of the movie in DVD+BD combo in a beautiful mediabook packaging, the dics has forced French subtitles when playing the English audio.

I notice the Sony catalog titles don't go down in price much so for $17.10 I decided to buy this today.

No reviews on the film video quality so from some of what I've read it's suppose to look good.

Interesting that this movie isn’t available on iTunes vudu or listed on Movies Anywhere but it’s available on Amazon. Is the digital exclusive for Amazon?

It’s a Sony release which is a part of Movies Anywhere.

The Blu-ray looks great!

No, it isn't exclusive to Amazon. It's also available on Google Play. I don't know why Sony hasn't added it to the other digital retailers yet.

Both blu-rays and the streaming HD version should be using the same 4K restoration because they all appeared around the same time. The movie showed up on Amazon in HD first, then a couple weeks later the Arrow blu-ray was announced, and then a couple weeks after that the Sony blu-ray was announced.
