Default The Capture (1950) - The Film Detective

Coming to Blu-ray 1/18 from The Film Detective

The Capture (1950)

From writer Niven Busch, the author of Duel in the Sun, comes an equally torrid sizzler, loaded with the intrigue and passion that marked the golden age of cinema. Cast with strong performers, this story of guilt and forbidden love still packs a jolt. Injured and on the run from police, Lin Vanner (Lew Ayres) confesses the sordid details of his life to a priest, which includes the death of a man he'd turned over to the police. Vanner also reveals that he fell in love with the dead man's widow (Teresa Wright), only to have his past catch up to him. Haunting and offbeat, The Capture (1950) was directed by one of Hollywood's best, John Sturges (The Great Escape).

Bonus Materials:
- Original Commentary track
- Original essay in full color booklet

The Film Detective is subtitling all of its releases now. They even provide subtitles for the commentaries.

Just finished watching this disc. Was a blind buy. I liked the film!

As for the disc itself, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The encode is, once again, mediocre. All the brighter scenes, the day light scenes and fully lit scenes look really nice. The print looks slightly dupey, but still light years ahead of the copies I've seen online. It's cleaned up very well, only a few specks here and there, and a bit of instability.
The problem is the night time/darker scenes. Contrast really suffers and it's very smeary and ghosting is apparent during all outdoor night time scenes. I don't know if this was done during the restoration or is a product of the mediocre encode. This would've been pretty top notch if not for this issue, sadly.

Anyway, I still recommend the disc. 3.5/5 for video quality. Audio sounds good too.

agree with all your points concerning PQ and AQ

I really applaud what film detective does, and i liked the xtras too, featurettes about teresa wright and john sturges and an audio commentary, plus it has subtitles, I think even the featurettes have subs, which is a nice touch because a lot of extras dont have subs.

As for the film, it didnt work for me, but it was very interesting to watch one of sturges early efforts. Ive always liked sturges and found him very underrated
