Default help! can't log onto psn. dns error?

so i just talked to my 'verizon specialist' and he says the reason i can't log onto the psn is because my broadband modem is an older model and therefore needs to have a router hooked up to it to be able to get online with my ps3.

does that make sense or is that just smoke blowing? im hard wired now with an ethernet cable directly from my ps3 into the modem. I get the ip address verified then get a dns erro and cant connect to the internet.

any advice? does that sound legit? I just wanna play Warhawk!!!! lol.

If you already have a pc hooked up to the modem he could be right. When I first got my ps3 and 360 I tried it before buying a router and it would not work. I picked up a d-link wbr-1310 for about 40.00 and set it all up and now it works great.
You could try copying all the settings from you pc to ps3 ant try it using the same port your pc is on. Meaning switching out ethernet cables every time.
If you still get the DNS error go over to playstations web site and get in the ps3 forum and do a search for DNS error and you will find some DNS settings you can try to use to remedy the problem I had to this after one of the updates 1.51 I think. My dns settings are 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 after I did that mine worked fine.
Hope this helps you out.

What i realized if you are using a publicly shared network, like in school/college for example. you might have a problem logging in, since a lot of people are logged online at that time.

I too was getting the dns message and it's legit. I have a verizon connection as well but my problem was in the phone lines themselves. So I called and they sent out two techs and they fixed the problem and I've been gaming ever since (gamertag:mrb713)

thanks for all your advice. I tried all and still didnt work. SO I went out and bought a nexttech router for 40 bucks at circuit city.. and maybe that verizon tech knew what he was talking about after all.

I hooked it up and it worked in seconds flat!! been loving the online play of many titles except Warhawk . Im looking around and it seems like it might be a psnetwork problem and not a 'me' problem.. haha. thanks again.

cheers
David

Huh that's retarded. Why becsue the DNS servers are on ISP end. If there is a DNS issue, it means that your PS3 no longer can resolve the URLs into IP addresses. Unlike PCs which have a DNS cache which can resolve addreses without contacting DNS server if that entry exits in cache. If you add a NAT based router it does nothing to DNS other than foward it to your home network devices and vice versa. Infact NAT routers (your basic internet sharing router) would make DNS issues worse in some cases Why is this an issue, well because your DNS address is the same as the router, but your router is basically fowarding the DNS requests back to your ISP and receives DNS replys from ISP and fowards them to your home network. ISPs are huge, they consist of many servers and have more than one DNS server in a given area of service. If one server is busy, the second server can take over, the ipaddress for DNS server may change, the NAT router is usually kinda slow to update the address, your network device such as PS3 will not know anything cause it uses the router's IP. Thus your PS3 can't resolve the PSN network url, your connection is interupted. You try again, and it may connect, but dissconcect at times. Trust me im MCP, A+ certified, i also use a wifi router which also has this very problem.

The tootal noob workaround would be to directly connect device to modem.

Since you are directly connected then it can be remedied with a static DNS address. First you figure out the DNS addresses, then manualy input it.

How? in the PS3 nework setting, check Network Statisitics, jot down the DNS1 and DNS2 numbers that you were given by DHCP. IPs given automatically have a lease time, then they are refreshed, an so can the DNS addresses can be refreshed. When maualy entered it forces the PS3 to only these numbers, even when your IP lease is up. This reduces the the DNS issues and not completely solve it.

thing to know: PS3 will disconect while playing PS1 or PS2 games, and DVD movies.

PSN network may have issues whith their own DNS servers which they use to host their site (DNS is required to have your own web server).
