Been hoping for a WAC release. Caught this on TCM a couple years or so ago and loved it.

I believe this was Sharon Tate's first credited and major role in a film.

A behind the scenes promo for her was made back then called All Eyes on Sharon Tate. Would be nice if that was included.

I figured was this coming soon. There’s a glorious HD stream of it on the Criterion Channel currently, and I was surprised to learn it hadn’t gotten a disc release yet.

Yeah, it's a great choice.

I bought it about ten years ago on a WA DVD, and it was one of my favorite blind buys (out of many dozens over the years).

Never really saw it getting an upgrade before a lot of other titles which still aren't out, and never saw many (anyone?) even asking for it.
But it's great that the people picking these recognize a worthy deep catalog title when they see it.

Grabbed DVD’s of this and The Window in WBShop’s final sale. I’m now expecting to see Blu-rays of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and Pretty Maids All in a Row within the year.

Awesome! I remember waking up to a black and white horror movie playing on youtube a few years ago and it kinda creeped me out. Turned out it was this and have been wanting a blu-ray release for a while now.

It was on TCM Europe back like 20 years ago, all the time. I think I will buy this.

I watched this a few months ago for the first time and liked it quite a bit. Here was my brief opinion on it at the time.
Quote:
This has got to be the strangest film in J Lee Thompson's filmography.
Workers employed at a French vineyard quietly follow old pagan rituals that call for the life of the marquis owner to save his crops during dry seasons.
Another great cast...you have David Niven as the vineyard owner, Deborah Kerr playing his wife, Donald Pleasance being weird, David Hemmings being equally weird & riding around on a white horse shooting doves out of the sky with a bow & arrow.
Sharon Tate in one of her first roles plays his brother (she looks absolutely stunning in this film! definitely a valid reason to watch it)...oh and John Le Mesurier briefly shows up as a doctor.
The castle setting & its surrounding areas make for a wonderfully creepy setting, the black & white cinematography, the use of shadow & light are superb & the camerawork is top notch.
There are some great set pieces one in particular
[Show spoiler]involving Deborah Kerr being menaced by some druid like characters in black hooded robes in the woods.

My only negative is the plot which is a bit confusing, otherwise there is a lot to like here.

That makes it sound like L'Osier Homme. Wonder if Anthony Shaffer ever saw it...

Same. I've seen it three times and was unfortunately less impressed with each repeat viewing. For me it falls apart during the last scenes and they help undermine the incredible atmosphere of shrouded dread that is so skillfully achieved prior to then. Not a bad film by any stretch, I just become disappointed and find it unravels toward the climax. For all the stuff in it that does work, and there is a lot, so don't misunderstand me, I can't help but feel let down by the movie as a whole. However, I will probably pick up the Blu should it ever get attractively discounted. Maybe the fourth time is the charm?

Nice to see the positive anticipation for this one and discover that people still enjoy old fashioned slow burn horror pictures.

Default Some background

Just google stuff,
but news to me outside of the title swap.
Troubled shoot to say it mildly.

The original director was Sidney J. Furie,
who had signed a three-picture deal with Ransohoff.
In August 1965, shortly before filming was to begin, Furie was replaced by Michael Anderson.
When Anderson fell ill,
he was replaced in turn by J. Lee Thompson.
Shortly before filming started, the title of the movie was changed to 13.

shooting
Filming started on 13 September 1965.
In November, with only two weeks of shooting to be completed,
Novak injured her back when she was thrown from a horse while doing an important scene on location in France.
The film was shut down while Novak sought treatment.
She tried to resume filming two weeks later,
but she was exhausted after only one day of work and was unable to go on.
"There is no permanent damage to Kim's back," her husband, Richard Johnson, said.
"It is not something that will trouble her for the rest of her life. She will recover eventually.
It is going to take time and will not be an easy matter."

Novak later said the injury was a broken vertebra

"It is tragic, but without Kim or a replacement, we cannot go on,"
David Niven said. "The person I feel most sorry for is director J. Lee Thompson.
He has put everything into this picture."

Novak was replaced by Deborah Kerr.
As a result, many scenes had to be reshot,
with Novak seen only in some long shots.
Filming resumed with Kerr in December.

However, David Hemmings recalls in his autobiography
that he witnessed a bitter argument between Kim Novak and Martin Ransohoff near the end of filming
and that led Kim Novak to be sacked and the film to be reshot with Kerr.

Some promotional material ended up being produced then altered before releases.
