Default Center in or out?

moving into our new house in a couple of weeks...i will be building a dedicated home theater with my current gear...so i'd like to know if i should keep the center channel in the stand or bring it out onto a stand in front of the stand...i may also have the option of mounting it above the tv but not sure if i like that idea...here is my current setup in the apartment

I vote leave the bad boy in there. You've got a nice clean setup as it is. If you have a larger room, you could spread the towers out and maybe toe them in a bit...

First of all, great looking setup. There probably would be some benefit to raising the center up some though.

if it sounds good where it is, then leave it there. however, you could experiment by pulling it out and setting it on a little stand or stool about the height it is now or a little higher and play stuff you already have heard before with the speaker in it's original spot and see if you like that better. if you do, then you know what needs to be done! Oh, and how do those LSi25's sound, I've been looking at them on the Polk site!

well i cant really experiment for another 27 days...and the countdown begins (til i can play my movies as loud as i want)...it just seems im losing a little low end from the center while using the audissey so im thinking it maybe getting some feedback from the cabinet...or im just not used to the audissey setup...though it does sound a million times clearer

as for the lsi25, i really can't say enough about them..they are power hungry but given the power, they sound clear crisp and all around awesome...im using the sub's are stand alone with my sub preout so theres really no need for an additional subwoofer...i used to have the lsi subwoofer but sold it...the 25's put out plenty of bass

I like solarrdadd's idea ! If you think it is loosing some low end , It's probably because it is in the stand .
And why can't you experiment now ? Just because you can't crank it does not mean you can't get an Idea what it will sound like !!!

BTW ~ Nice setup

Maybe he could just angle it up some, and see if it sounds any different. The way it's stashed in there, it's a pretty clean setup.

I like the way it looks right now in the cabinet. I couldn't really see any real advantage to putting it outside, especially aesthetically. I can envision a stand in front of a stand looking pretty cluttered, but that's just a visual; maybe it'll look good.

I hear that! My house should be ready for moving into in November. As soon as I signed the building contract my first thought was "I cannot wait to get out of this apartment and start watching my movies at FULL volume"

Nice setup. Looks very similar to mine actually. Very clean. Keep it. Just crank that bad boy up.

Have you tried bumping the center up 1 or 2 db?

good suggestions guys...it sounds great right now...but for a dedicated theater room i really want it to sound as best as it could...but from what everyone says, it shouldnt make too much difference so i'll probably keep it this way

eclimax13,

First off, congrats on the new house and the opportunity for a dedicated home theater room. If I move to a new home, the possibility of a dedicated theater room will be a consideration!

There is a real advantage to moving your center to its own stand, and that is to eliminate the issue of cavity resonance/coloration of the audio, which is generally more noticeable with vocals and dialogue sounds.

Even now, it looks as though your center channel is tucked in it's location a bit too far. Try moving it forward so that the front baffle is even, or even a bit more forward than even, if you are comfortable with that. Even a half-inch of baffle extension from the front of the opening can bring about appreciable sonic improvement.

Best of success to your upcoming move and theater setup!

^^ha..the dedicated theater room was my number 1 want when i was looking at houses...if i couldnt do it, i didnt buy it which made decisions pretty slim...luckily we found the perfect one....anyway the way the system has to sit in the stand make me unable to move the speaker forward...the cabinet effect was my main concern and since this will be a theater room only, i'd rather give up a little bit of "looks" for better sound, and to be honest i dont really think it'll look that bad using the sanus stand thats black and cherry...thanks for your suggestion

It looks like you have some room to drop the shelf down one notch and then angle the center to you're listing position.

First of all I would not move the speaker above the TV. You want the front soundstage coming from the same height. Try and have the center as close to the same as your L/R fronts as far as height is concerned. Thats my only advice
