I not sure whether i should spend 400 more for a 1080p plasma over a 720p one, clearly the only thing that really use 1080p is blu-ray and few games. But i can't tell much difference between 720p, 1080i and 1080p

but for the OP.... Many will tell you that CRTs look better with SD material (because of the color replication) but I haven't heard that a 720p plasma reproduces SD material better than a 1080p one....... Probably just false information, but someone may know better than I, or have at least a reason why someone may theorize that ![]() |

It all depends on the plasma.
A 720p PDP-5080FD Kuro might look better than a 1080p Insignia plasma, you know? Most manufacturers increase the performance as they go up the ladder, so usually a Panasonic 1080p will perform better than a Panasonic 720p and a Pioneer 1080p better than a Pioneer 720p. Outside of like-manufacturers in the same year's offerings there's no rule of thumb. I would say that if you're going 42" then go 1080p...because the 720p sets are only 1024x720 panels instead of 1280x720. |

It's not just for plasmas, it also happens on LCD, but it's slightly worse on LCD, because LCD uses triadpixels whereas plasmas use phosphors - same reason lower resolutions look better on CRT monitors than LCD monitors. Some displays will upscale everything fine and it'll look great, but others will not.
When they first came out, yes, 480i/p looked better on a 720p than a 1080p, because the displays internal upscaling wasn't very good, then upscaling DVD players came out and sorted that nonsense, and then for the SD tv, TVs started coming out with their own upscaling process. Again, it depends on how the display in question handles upscaling 480i/p to 720p or 1080i/p, nowadays they all do it just fine in exception of a few here and there. Anyway, the reason, on older plasmas, that 720p looked better in some cases than 1080p when it came to 480i/p content is that 720p is closer to the original contents resolution. Not as much software stretching was done, in a nut shell. AGAIN, now it looks fine in exception of some oddball plasma displays that don't do it right, but from what I can see those are the much lower end plasmas. |

What Circuit City employee told you that?? HAHA.
Anyway. I would say it depends on size of screen and the specific sets ability to up/down convert the signal when thinking about 720 vs 1080. If it's a smaller screen size then in SOME cases 720p looks great (or good enough for you), and you won't get a huge benefit of 1080p (it'll look so close to the same picture). But in a bigger screen suze (37" and up) you should definately want to get 1080p for your blurays and HD content. Standard def TV looks worse though I've found on larger tv's with 1080p rather than 720p. But it depends on the specific set you're looking at. there's no right or wrong answer here... but 400$ is a lot of money! |

My 720p or 1368*768 panasonic plasma has better blacks than the new ones like panasonic G10 and its 4 years old. Checked the black levels and its closes tv to it would be the Pioneer Kuro. So yes my 720p looks better than my friends 1080p plasma on sd and hd just because it has better blacks.

Really 60,000 hrs to half brightness. Which is 8hrs every day for more then 20 years. Now "some" are saying 100,000 hrs. So plasmas will out live their life with you most of the time, just like LCD. As far as good LG is, I couldn't say, but you should be fine. Just enjoy
