Default GL BD Drive and Radeon incompatiblity?

What is Invalid Pointer!!!!

It seems I am the only person on the whole internet that has this problem, this is the error message I get from Powerdvd Ultra 7.3 when I press play, of course I get no playback of Blu-ray titles, I have been googling system requierments, error mesages, compatability issues etc for over a week now, no one anywhere know's what this error message refers to, no one!! Also two BD advisor apps have pointed to my graphics drivers and display. . . . wtf?? Radeon HD 4870's and a Dell1080p 22" I Don't think so!!

Here's my Specs (this is a good PC!!) it should play BD titles!!

LGG GGC H20L BD multidrive.

2x Radeon HD4870. (run out of Xfire mode to run 3 screens)

Intel core2duo 3ghz.

Windoze XP Pro.

Dell 1080p 22" monitor.

The two BD titles I have chosen are Blade Runner Final Cut (US Region) and Blade Runner Final Cut (UK Region) also Predator (UK Version)

I'll also be running out of region changes soon

I fail to see why this system won't work, the drive has current firmware, the graphics cards support HDCP and have the latest drivers, as far as I can tell all my hardware is as good as I can get, I'm down something like £400 on Blu-ray products and over a week of SOLID stress trying to find out whats wrong.

I've tested EVERY BD software player I can find NONE of them will play BD's from on my system

Does ANYONE have any idea what might be wrong? I'd even appreciate simply a bit of morral support at this stage. . .

What does this mean, Invalid Pointer: Error Message 80004003?

Sounds like a good system. I Just built one like it. Are you running xp 64bit or 32bit? I know 64bit of xp isn't vary stable(so I heard) IDK if that could be the problem or not. My pc isn't set up for BD yet so idk how much I can help you, but all I know is that your graphics card is extremely good and your processor is one of the better ones out there.(e8500 Right?)
Did you just finnish building your pc? IDK what to tell you other then make sure you install all your drivers and such. I know I'm not helping much but I know how it feels when ppl look at your thread and no one replies. I don't know what the errer means...sorry man I really wish I could help!

Thanks, no really it's cool to just hear from someone, I'm at my wits end, so is my gf, we've been litaraly searching the net in 15 - 20 hours at a time on two PC's for about 8/9 days now. . . Sound's tragic doesn't it. When a problem like this gets to us, we don't give up very easilly, maybe we're to stubborn I don't know.

Forgot to mention:

XP Pro 32 bit

Processor is an E8400

It's starting to look like this is a compatiblity problem with the Radions I find it hard to believe but it's the only lead we've got to go on now, all the drivers are up to date, all the firmware etc but "S" (gf) has found something refering to this invalid pointer posted by a guy using Radion HD4780's also.

Didn't find much of anything on the error but the common thread I noticed was the combination of Asus motherboards and Asus branded Radeon cards. Also, the X-FI sound card seems to play some role here as well - though you didn't mention if you use one. If you have neither than I suppose you can stop reading here. Otherwise I found a post where the person managed to fix the problem (albeit shortly) by using the vendor's drivers and not the ones from ATI. You can check out the thread here. Hope this helps and best of luck.

As a last test install only one video card with only one monitor to see if it works, if i does then, now you know where the problem is.

Yeah h'ha. Done that. . . . . twice, no three times lol

I'm concerned now about my sound cards, could my sound card really cause a problem, because I have two, an e-mu 0404 and an Alesis multimix 16 usb.

These are amongst the best you can get, but . . . . they're not designed for anything to do with HDCP.

I'll un-install them and see what happens.

thanks for the link also mrblue.

well, the sound card is wedged between the two radeons, I don't really want to remove it all so I un installed all the drivers, still nothing.

Judging from the huge amounts of problems people are having with the GGC H20l and bundled Power dvd software I think it's time to call it quits, I'm going to phone LG technical support, give them a couple of chances to fix this mess. . . . swear at them a bit and then back this peice of *@!+ LG drive to Amazon, there is no way that after spending this much time (over a week) and money (over £400) on a new screen, new blu-ray titles and new drive that I should still be without BD playback.

I officially hate LG and Cyberlink!! They're total b'stards!! may they both rot in the filth of they're own fornication.

This may be a stretch, but since you are using XP.. do you have the Toshiba UDF 2.5 reader installed? BDs are burned using the UDF file system, which XP is not epuiped with, Vista is. Might be your issue... maybe not.

I have a LG - GGWH20-L on my Vista, I also use Cyberlink to burn (not view) and it works fine.

Good luck.

Hi, thanks for the sugestion, for a minuet there, well an hour or so things started to look up, but . . . Installing the Toshiba Udf 2.5 (driver?) did nothing, I followed the instructions over at the Slysoft forum, had no problem finding the correct temp folder found the thdudf.inf no problem, installed it no problem, but still Power dvd just sits there. .

says "Invalid pointer" at me.

Then does nothing. . .

Computer says no

1. Install the latest patch for your Power DVD Ultra 7.
http://update.cyberlink.com/ftpdload...D090217-02.exe

This update is the latest one that Cyberlink has quietly posted. It is newer than the one posted at their site.

2. If you install beta or modded driver, remove them and install only the official driver.

3. If it still doesn't work, my guess is it has something to do with your Radeon HD 4000 series. PowerDVD 7 is an older player and at the time of its release, it only supports Radeon HD 3000 series. So, it may not be able to recognize the newer video card.

Hi Hendra.

Thanks for your help

It's weird, that installer says it's version 5105.0, but when I checked my Power dvd folder the exe file says it's 5113.0? I'm still getting the Invalid Pointer, Error 80004003. message, their tech support better have some answers for me today I can tell ya, because this is just getting rediculas.

I think personally Power dvd is the culprit, every Cyberlink piece of software that I've installed has been riddled with bug's, they either can't connect to the internet or they can't update etc etc they're well dodgy imo. But then, no other BD software seems to work with this drive either, this seems to point to a hardware issue.

I'll post any progress I make with they're Tech supports later today. . . .

I'm praying it's not my Radeons

Are you trying to use more than 1 screen? My 4850s work fine with 1 monitor, but try to add a second one and no go. I am running crossfire btw. I had a lot of trouble with the ATI drivers at first (had to go back to an earlier versions, etc). I finally found some that worked (not at home now, I'll chcek to see which I ended up with later). I do not have a sound card, either - I'm using the hdmi output on the Radeons for sound, but I haven't had any problems once I got the ATI drivers I have now installed.

Not clear on this - have you tried playing standard DVD's? Do they play?

I would really appreciate that

I'm backing this drive tommorrow if I can't resolve this tonight, LG techsupport said it sounds like the drive is faulty, they also sadid it shouldn't matter if you have other monitors running, I have 1x 22" 1080p HDCP compliant Dell monitor and two VGA asus 9" all running off of the Redeons, these are switched out of Xfire to allow for the 3 screens to be able to run independantly.

But, I have tested all this by running just the one Dell hdcp monitor with the radeons (in) Xfire mode and I still get the same result.

All drivers and firmware are the latest versions.

Yeah, it's just Blu-ray that wont play, normal dvd playback is fine, CD's data etc... I'm just going to get a new drive I think.

Can anyone recommend a Good Drive, other than an LG?

Don’t give up on the LG yet, using LG drive and has worked flawlessly. Have you tried the latest version of PowerDVD to see if it makes a difference, download the 30 day trial and give it a go.

Also have you the latest firmware for the LG drive? Edit see the answer is yes.

yeah, latest firmware 1.03, it was 1.03 already but I even flashed it again to make sure, I'm still dead in the water.

I've tested this Drive with WinDVD HD 9 and also Power dvd 9.

Power dvd 9 wouldn't even install, just kept saying you are not connected to the internet which I was obviously otherwise how did I just download it (stupid software), I found a way around this which involved deleting a dill file which breaks the link to the internet, and the software installed but wouldn't run.

Win dvd 9 was a no go also, wouldn't play any BD's either. Same thing with Zoom Player, and also Sony vegas.

It's apsolutley hopeless, I'm sure this drive is defective, I've seen loads of posts from other people saying te exact same thing ie - system is fully HDCP compliant and meet's the Drives specs, dvd's, cd's, data etc all play back fine, BD's do not. . . . non of them were resolved.

Not only that, but the lengths to which I have had to go to up until now are totally un accceptable, no drive should be this problematic.

I don't mean to sound stressed out, appologies if I have, it's just one of those things I guess. imo nothing is going to fix this thing, other than replaicing it.

The DHL guy is collecting it tommorrow so I still have tonight to try any last ditch attempts, I just don't think there is anything left to try.

are you using the OEM version bundled with the drive? I would suggest trying the Ultra version, could also try Arcsoft Total Media Theater they released a version that supported both HD-DVD and blu-ray. If you are just using Blu-Ray movies and no HD-DVD I would suggest upgrading to either PowerDVD8 or 9

as for region issues, I think there are programs out there that allow this (anydvd I think might).

I'm using the Ultra version, I havn't tried Total Media Theater yet, I'll give that a shot.

Funnily I can rip the m2ts files with the drive, but I can't get playback. . .
does that point to anything? I mean if I can rip the files and explorer can see the files ok, why shouldn't I be able to get playback?

Shit I hope this isn't a Codec issue, I have very good codecs, but maybe a conflict?

OK, Total media theater just bombs when I hit play, here's what Arcsofts BD advisor says.

Doe this make sence to anyone?

I don't think this is correct, Radeon HD4870's are the d'sb's, there are very few that can top them. Also my Dell 1080p is a HDCP compliant monitor.

If any of you could talk me through it all again to double check I'd be very greatfull.
