Default New Catagory Request - BR-CD

NYG,

Is there a possibility of creating a new catagory called: Blu-Ray CD (BR-CD). Why ?, because shortly the music recording industry will be releasing BR-CD's for the audiophile, who want to enjoy and experience music at its finest. If you do so, this will provide a medium to discuss and review Music - BR-CD only as well as Blu-Ray musical concerts on Blu-Ray DVD's. This catagory would focus on the audio side of this new technology. I am confident that this new catagory will be active and get support from any audiophiles who are members of this Forum. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Jim

I'm sure this could be done but unfortunately I'm not the one who can do it. I'll let Iceman and Marwin know about this thread though.

And as JTK said, please tell us more about BR-CD. I always knew it was possible but I suspected it wouldn't really happen since SACD and DVD-A pretty much fell flat on their faces. I'd definitely like to know more. Hopefully we'll see much more popular albums released and especially new releases which IMO help any audio (or video) format to survive.

You'd be surprized to know how many 'audiophiles' are here participating in this Forum, since we too have alot at stake in these forthcoming products. Hopefully, there are several others here I know who would also enjoy participating and contributing in this new section, dedicated to the Audio side of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Watch for responses to these posts!

i'd consider myself a big time audiophile. however i have not heard of anyone releasing audio BR. one of my favorite artists commented he would do a BR release nearly a year ago, however he later commented it was merely a plug for BR. point being, do we have any releases lined up for BR by musicians that is not music video? also i would like to point out that since CD format is (supposedly) lossless, BR audio would be much more unlikely than video since a full album of BR would be a very big burden for almost any musician. i'm guess that BR will not have many audio only releases. we can look at DVD-A as an analogy. however if the time does come i think a forum would be appropriate.

I would love to have BR-CD I know there is talk about that becoming the next high res audio format though I don't know if it will be audio only. I think many discs might be released with HD video and PCM audio with the option of just playing the audio like a disc and not requiring a video source.

it would be cool if artists started releasing 'video tracks' to their studio albums. it would obviously be very expensive to record music videos for every song on the album, but a cool visualization (like wmp video plugins on steroids) would be neat. something nondistracting, possibly ambient in nature.

Well maybe this what they NEED to do to drive sales up.

Imagine BDCD
For albums lts use a dual layer hybrid disc, one layer is standard 650 MB CD and the other is a 25 GB BD with 2.1ch 192kHz/24bit LPCM and a surround track in DTS HD Master Audio.

And for Singles one layer CD and one layer BD with the musicvideo and audiotracks all with HIGH bitrates!

Oh well, one can dream...

I'm not sure that LPCM standards on BD limits it to just 24/48 for 5.1 but certainly without video, a BD25 would have more than enough space to hold 192/24 5.1 LPCM mix. If the LPCM standards for BD do not allow this, the lossless advance codecs can do this rather easily.

Unfortunately, most music videos raw footage are edited using NTSC video even though most of them are shot using film. Telecining, editing and doing the VFX on HD adds more cost to the video which I think music labels would give only to A-list artistes or if the artistes would pay for it themselves.

Personally, I prefer the DSD sound. Maybe Sony can develop SABD, using the BD file structure but using DSD as the audio format.
