hate to break it to you, but outside of film lovers, Mann’s name has never meant anything to the general public. Ask 100 general public people who directed Heat, maybe 5 will know. He’s never been a household name or selling point.

However, it is still important to recognize that studios/producers will request him to direct because he tends to draw an elite ensemble cast for his projects. And it'll be the cast that sells the movie or in this case, the series. |

The same is true of most directors, really. It used to be that only Hitchcock and Cecil B DeMille could get people to go to the cinemas on their name recognition alone. Since the 80s we could probably add a few more names but by-and-large nobody cares who directs the film. It's all about who's in it for most people

First episode was fantastic and as good as anything Mann has done post The Insider. This is coming from someone who always finds something to appreciate in his work, Blackhat included.
I hope the quality continues. I will be tuning in. Love that they dropped three episodes right off the bat. Also, the protagonist (Elgort) is played very well. Haven’t seen anything else he’s been in so maybe I had that going for me. |

Watched all 3 episodes. It's OK, but that's about as far as I'd go. The way the trailer is cut makes it out to be some kind of exciting thriller with plenty of action. It's not that at all. If you go in expecting a drama, I imagine you'll enjoy it more.
Mann's episode - like most of his work since he discovered digital cameras - looks like it was shot on a camcorder. Given he was such an early adopter of the format, you'd think he'd have learned how to use it properly by now. Elgort's terrible, smug, & as punchable as ever, but the rest of the cast is very good, especially Ken Watanabe & Rinko Kikuchi. Rachel Keller reminded me a lot of Katee Sackhoff. I'll give it a couple more episodes, but it needs to do something interesting to grab me soon. BTW, did I miss a title card at the beginning saying when this is set? It's clearly not today, but if there were any mentions of a date, I didn't catch them. |

The first episode was so damn boring. Easily the most mundane hour of filmmaking I’ve ever watched from Michael Mann.
I don’t have any interest in watching the other two episodes. Ansel Elgort is too boring in this role for the series to be occupying so much time on him. Easy pass for those on the fence about this. It’s pointless really. |

A lot of the music choices make no sense for some of the club scenes and it’s annoying the hell out of me because they’re more than a few years off haha. |

Watched the first three episodes this afternoon. I really like what I have seen so far. Yeah, Elgort is kinda bland but not enough to make me turn it off. The cinematography is really nice and the score by Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans is terrific.
