Default The Films Of Doris Wishman: The Twilight Years coming from AGFA on May 31

Quote:
No one will ever make movies like Doris Wishman made movies. One of the most prolific women filmmakers in the history of American cinema, writer-director-editor Wishman created collisions between surrealism and exploitation that feel like they materialized from an alternate universe. THE FILMS OF DORIS WISHMAN: THE TWILIGHT YEARS surveys the last major era of Wishman’s career. From DEADLY WEAPONS and DOUBLE AGENT 73 (crime epics starring the iconic Chesty Morgan) to LET ME DIE A WOMAN (a semi-documentary about transgender people), AGFA + Something Weird are honored to present these triumphant DIY treasures in dazzling new restorations.

If you need an introduction to her, watch the memorable Doris Wishman episode of Son Of The Incredibly Strange Film Show. The highlight is when Jonathan Ross asks Doris to remind him what the plot of The Amazing Transplant was

Another fun interview occurred when she visited Late Night With Conan O'Brien (Roger Ebert is also present):

The above YouTube link is the censored American version that was shown on the Discovery Channel. I've now found the uncensored UK version on YouTube:

This looks like an excellent release. Despite the mention of both 1.37:1 and 1.85:1, the trailer makes it look like it will present all the main features in 4:3, too, which is fine with me. I just hope the widescreen ratio refers to something specific and not that they doubled up everything in both open-matte and widescreen. I thought that the caps from this disc:

looked very tight in 1.78:1 at times, so it'll be good to have the full image onboard.

I wa browsing about Chesty Morgan again thanks to this news and found this picture of her posted on Twitter from 2013:

These are not her best work in my opinion. Her early “classic” films like “Bad Girls Go To Hell” are much more deserving of a blu ray release.

Finally! This has been rumored for awhile and I'm so happy these are starting to come out. Deadly Weapons and Double Agent 73 are must haves and since I missed out on the first blu, I will be getting this for sure. I look forward to checking out her earlier work like Bad Girls Go To Hell as well. Thank you for posting all the trailers!

My fave Wishman movie is A Night to Dismember. I wonder if it will be part of the set.

Seems like they could pretty evenly split the next 2 sets into nudist films and roughie sexploitation films.

I've been curious how the magnetic slipboxes look when you put all the sets together. We never found out with the Cardonna collection since VS only released one volume. Looking forward to seeing how this design functions with the Doris Wishman set.

I am surprised that Russ Meyer didn't cast Chesty Morgan in any of his films, as he always had a thing for Women with big talent. I am so definitely getting this title, been a fan of Doris Wishman for years.

I hope the nudist set will carry the same disclaimer as the Diary Of A Nudist DVD:

I am curious why they decided to do her later films as the first set. Wishful thinking but maybe they found a print of one of her lost films last minute.......
Also I hope an upcoming set includes the recently found german print of the previously lost prince and the nature girl, even if it's just the german audio.

While I prefer her black and white roughies, I think the films on this set are her most berserk (barring Dismember) and would probably make the best starting point for the uninitiated. That's how I figure they're reasoning. I'd also guess they're probably taking SWV sales figures into account.

Weird how the biographer only does one Commentary here. In the one he does for deadly weapons, he talks about how he has a lot to say for all the movies, and hints at interesting stories for a lot of them, but he only did deadly weapons.
