Default Difference between these two versions!!!!!!!!

hello fellows

My question is whats the difference between rental movie and the one we bought

I have some of them with extra content
but on the other one I recently heard sony or the movies from others is doing two different discs one is rental and one is for retail

I wonder whats the general difference though?

I believe the OP is referring to Blu-Rays. My understanding in general is that the rental versions will be missing some of the extra features and will not include things like a digital copy, etc, that may come with the regular sale version. The specifics likely vary from title to title.

I think he's asking in general about differences in rental copies vs purchased and I used the vagueness of his post to poke a bit of fun by giving vague answers that could relate to any BD

Well there was a story going around a few weeks ago about studios using bare-bones editions of movies for rental stores.

Quote:
According to user reports, some studios are now manufacturing separate Blu-ray Discs for rental which are lacking most of the special features included in the BD retail version of the titles in question. This tactic started early this year with DVD and allegedly is now being expanded to Blu-ray as well.

Most titles devoid of extras come from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, such as 'I Love You, Beth Cooper' (which on the retail BD includes over half an hour of additional content) or 'My Life in Ruins'. But Warner Home Video is apparently also testing this approach: the rental version of 'Orphan' reportedly lacks bonus materials present on the retail version, such as an alternate ending.

In March, Fox first started creating separate rental and retail versions for the DVD releases of 'Marley & Me' and 'Slumdog Millionaire', as reported by Video Business. However, at the time Blu-ray rental copies of those two titles weren't affected (except for the lack of a bundled digital copy and/or DVD).

At the time, Fox justified the new strategy in a statement that said: “We have developed product variations to feed different consumer consumption models and behaviors. For rental customers, we're delivering a theatrical experience in the home while promoting upcoming releases; for retail [or sell-through] customers, we're offering a premium product that expands the entertainment experience of that particular property to further enhance ownership.”

Note that this is not the same situation as when a movie that is released on Blu-ray on a two-disc set gets only disc one rented out (e.g., 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'). In those cases, some rental companies such as Netflix offer the extras disc separately for rental as well.

I was sorting my Blu-ray collection and noticed I had 3 copies of Man of Steel.

Originally I thought I had bought 3 copies of the same movie, but when I loaded the disc, I noticed they started up with different trailers, ..etc..

Additionally when I checked the disc on my PC I noticed that the 3 discs were all of different sizes...

Is there anyway to determine what version/cut of the movie you have from either the size of the disc or something else?

Thank you in advance!!

Man of Steel is a Warner Bros production and they handle all their own distribution and so the film itself will be identical from one disc to the next. However since Warner handles their own worldwide distribution, they may add/remove language options as the need arises which would account for the difference in disc size. Obviously as they release updated versions of the film they are also likely to include newer trailers as well which would also impact the total disc size.

In regard to identifying versions of the film, I'd recommend going the the "Man of Steel" forum thread and posting your question there alone with perhaps cover art of each edition you own as I'm sure folks would be able to help you figure out when each disc was created.

As for the topic of the OP... Rental discs are something I personally find interesting and am a bit surprised that there isn't a collector market for. Many of them had lossy audio instead of lossless audio or had some other form of alternative artwork as well. Some lacked special features, and for others they were identical to the retail counterpart. The most special however offer alternative versions of the film in question...

Was a Blockbuster Exclusive back in 2011 and was the only way to see the theatrical edition of the film in HD... (it may still be for all I know).

Thanks for the quick reply TripleHBK!

I put the cases in storage as I kept the disc in a disc draw to save space...

All 3 discs look identical...

Back in the day when you put a CD into iTunes it would detect it and tell you what album you had inserted, etc...

It even told you if you had the UK cut or an international cut, ..etc..

I was wonder if there was anything similar like that for Blu-ray discs?
