The film was a very positive portrayal of Asians in the US at the time.

It drove me a little crazy when people were praising Crazy Rich Asians for its full Asian cast, it’s as if they completely forgot about this film.

Also Bruce Lee as Kato was the first Asian superhero. When the action started we all watched Kato, not the Green Hornet. He was a super positive role model in the sixties even though his secret identity was as a houseboy, we all knew it was the perfect disguise for this tough guy.

The excitement builds.....this is a very long awaited title for me, since day 1 of the format. This new version was shown on TCM months ago (or was in Reteroplex) and it had the new Samual Goldwyn logo on it so I knew it was the new master (they own the TV rights while Universal has the home vid rights, of course licensed to Kino now). I have to say the picture and sound are stunning, this should be one incredible blu-ray.

Wonder if the Umbrella release will have the overture, intermission and exit music of Millie in stereo, several us us made them aware of the issue and they said they were checking into it..

It's about time. It's one of R&H's best scores which is wonderfully previewed when the overture is playing with the opening credits. Those run on the background of Dong Kingman's beautiful paintings. The cast is uniformly excellent but it's Myoshi Umeki who just walks away with everyone's heart. In those days if you looked up cute or adorable in a dictionary, you might well have seen her picture. There were some casting controversies in the original Broadway production (Larry Blyden, specifically, playing Sammy Fong eventually replaced by Jack Soo) and some others. At that time assembling an all Asian Broadway cast was not that easy. Despite that the show was considered a success running for a year and half. When the movie was made, having an all Asian cast was much more doable. I've had the original DVD forever but when it's up-scaled on a 65" 4K TV, it definitely shows it age so I'm really looking forward to a proper 1080P version. It gets here tomorrow!

I watched it the other night, and enjoyed it very much. The picture quality didn't knock me out, but I'm sure it's better than the DVD. And you're right about Myoshi Umeki - she really does steal the show.

I'm still wondering how the laserdisc was pan-and-scan only. Sweet Charity was the same way despite actually having its exit music.

Got my delivery yesterday and took a quick look. I'm very happy with the Blu-ray transfer. The image is reasonably bright and colors are very good. The DTS audio is solid. I'm all too happy to chuck the old DVD into the waste basket

I saw it last night, looked really good.

Nice upgrade over the DVD which I'll still be keeping.
