I don't know about DNR. In fact in other shots you can actually see the grain a little better, probably since you're looking at a 2160 image compared to that of a 1080.

I'm just thankful in shot 2 I shared yesterday there is no compression noise/macro/microblocking to be seen in the dark corner.

That old MGM BD looks vertically stretched. So I guess the Kino BD paired with the HD is also affected or did they correct that?

Still brighter than what I'm used to, having only ever watched the old MGM BD and the horrible DVD before that. Does look a little weird, though. Like something Criterion would do.

I wish I could see the print of the film I saw back in 2010 or so again to see if it looked more like the Arrow or Kino appearance. All I can remember was how amazing it was to see the film in a theater and how it just obliterated the DVDs.

The Kino disc will be my go to disc going forward. I will say I felt it was a touch on the wrong side of being constrasty. But it's clearly sharper and more film like overall then the Arrow disc.

I'll assume Kino issued the transfer as is by MGM and maybe Arrow did there own work from the raw scan considering the framing differences and conflicting contrast. Also some minor shots looked like better material was found and rescanned.

Or is it possible this is an entirely new scan?

I checked this out last night. I'm not sure which is more "accurate" in terms of the more washed out look of the Arrow or the increased contrast of the Kino, but I won't be watching the Arrow after this. The Kino is just so much more visually appealing to my eye and there is almost nothing lossed in the way of shadow detail or black crush. I'd say buy this one with confidence.

I finally got around to watching my copy tonight. I thought it looked excellent in-motion.

I would assume Kino did their own work from the raw scans. There have been cases where MGM have tweaked label restorations (ex: the German StudioCanal disc of "Midnight Cowboy" has the first five minutes trying to tone down the cyan push of Criterion's restoration) but I don't know if MGM ever did their own HD master or had a 4K stream/DCP using Arrow's raw scans.

Yeah, the Criterion release of MIDNIGHT COWBOY was just...HORRIBLE.

Agreed. The Kino is going to be my default option to watch The Apartment.

Now that more people have this, can we confirm definitively that the Blu-ray included in the combo pack (and Kino's standalone Blu-ray) do not use the new 4K restoration presented on the UHD, it simply recycles MGM's 2012 Blu-ray transfer?

Caps-a-holic seems to indicate as much, sadly...

I was just hoping maybe it was an error on early pressings.

They did the same thing with Mad Max.

Glad I've held on to my Arrow copy then.

Broke down and bought for a nice price from Kino’s Amazon seller. Keeping the Arrow for the reverse art and extras, but it’s an absolutely stunning disc. Terrific improvement on an already great blu. The mono sounded nice, too.

Canada Arrow or Kino?

Which do I go for when it comes to the full package (a/v/extras)? I can get the 4K for $31.98, or the Arrow release, from a seller, for $30 (Brand New).

If the UHD isn’t how this movie is supposed to look, then well, it should be. I thought this looked absolutely stunning.

Just watched this one tonight in 4k as my first viewing of the film and I have to say I think I’ve found my new favorite film (sorry High and Low)! This was a blind buy off eBay for $15 and I’d have to say that it was worth every penny. The 4k of this looked absolutely splendid as well. If treated properly that’s just the way black and white movies crumble, cookie-wise.

Has anyone recently got The Apartment off of Amazon? Did it still have a slipcover?
