I had a question to anyone that has this reciever. I was thinking about buying one, read the reviews on Cnet and they gave it great reviews. My only question is they said that the only problems are with video conversion. Now, does that mean that it will make my blu-ray player worse, or it only had problems with upconversion. It specifically mentions upconversion, but just want to make sure. Since your passing through the HDMI, and my TV is
1080P, I would hope that it would be the same as it is now. Any input would be great. Hopefully I phrased my question right. |

The Onkyo 605 will pass a clean 1080p,720p,480p..etc signal.
Its in the upconversion...it can convert component, composite, svideo into HDMI, but only 720p. So if youre watching a bluray you'll be fine with a 1080p signal, but if you want to run a nintendo wii from component through hdmi it will only be 720p. hope that helps. |

Another question on the 605, Can it do auto speaker calibration with 5.1 instead of 7.1?
I have heard that some of their models, the auto speaker calibration can only be done with all 7 + sub hooked up. |

It can do 5.1 (my father has this model, and 5.1 set-up)....you tell the Onkyo there are no back speakers.

For the price, I love this receiver. I have had it for about three months and have nothing but good experiences with it. I don't use it for upconversion, but have tried it and it is not good at all IMO.

....pointless to get into 480i to 480p conversion explanation, so stated 480p to 480p as basically saying the Onkyo is a little more advanced than a 480i to 480p simple conversion. point being: The Onkyo 605 will pass a clean 1080p,720p,480p..etc signal. Its in the upconversion...it can convert component, composite, svideo into HDMI, but only 720p. I am getting that 875 this week and taking back the 605 i got yesterday. The 605 is horrible. I can't believe that my BOSE GS Series 2 system sound so much better than the 605. I bought the 805, then took it back for the 605 and i bought them new with brand new KEF home theatre system 2005.2 model. The satellites sound ok but that big bass speaker so SUCKSSSSSSSSS. My bose bass box is WAY better but i can't use it with the KEF cause of the proprietary connection cable. THe bose base box is so precise and clear and have life and drama to it. THe KEF one is so DULL and DEAD and just boom instead of CRACK and SPLIT. And Man i tried EVERY channel for the sound on 5 different blu rays and they all sound only ok. I have it connected to the ps3 via hdmi in and out. And my tv has no sound coming out of it and it's all connected straight hdmi. The wii i have it connected to the game/tv part of the receiver with the a/v cable it came with and all u do is hear it but can't see it. I don't know if i'm just not setting it up right or what. I bought 100 bucks in THICK Monster speaker wiring, bannana plugs and all. I'm SOOOOOOOOOO burnt i can break the thing. The video scaling is HORRIFIC!! WHen i put the ps3 and everything else back to the kdl 40xb2 directly, everything looked better. I put the bose back and it sounds better. I don't get it, bose doesn't have the hdmi on the series 2 gs, just coaxial. How come i can't get any sound coming out of the hdmi cables other than the ps3 and that's it? Do i have to connect the optical cables? Cause that would defeat the purpose of the 1.3 hdmi cables i paid an arm and a leg for. PLUS How come my tv i can't hear anything coming out of it, only when i play blu ray. HELPPPPPPPPP ......
U bought the 875 right? HOw did u connect it all? Do u have pics of ur back connections? CAn u answer above? thanks ![]() |

I've detected a slight degradation of my picture while running the PS3 thru HDMI on my 605, as compared to running the HDMI directly to the TV. Granted, my TV is limited to 1080i, but it just doesn't seem quite as life-like thru the 605. Do I have something set incorrectly? Am I somehow down-converting to 720P without knowing it? I also have encountered the following issues... 1) I have the PS3 attached via HDMI 1 & I'm able to play movies (BD or otherwise) and CD's just fine. However, I'm unable to play a CD that's encoded DTS-ES 6.1 (Sheryl Crow - Globe Sessions). It only makes a hissing sound when I try to play any track. I know the PS3 dosen't have DTS decoding built in, but I'm able to play BD X-Men which has DTS-MA soundtrack using DTS-ES discrete with no problem. I've tried the bitstream and linear PCM settings on the PS3 but no results. Any Ideas? 2) (Onkyo 605 related) I have the TV's (1080i Sony WEGA) digiital audio out hooked up to the "Game/TV" in connection on the 605 but I'm unable to hear TV audio thru it (no cable or sat, just on-board digital tuner). The connection is assigned to "Game/TV" but I've got no sound when I choose the component. 3) Because the PS3 has on-board TrueHD decoding, shouldn't the 605 show that instead of "Multi-Channel PCM? Any help from you Onkyo 605 veterans out there is much appreciated. Honestly, I've never had this much trouble hooking up my stereo system before...must be gettin' old. Many thanks in advance.
