Default PlayStation 3 Goes TrueHD for Blu-ray Playback

PlayStation 3 Goes TrueHD for Blu-ray Playback

Quote:
"Following weeks of rumors, Dolby has confirmed the surround capabilities built into Sony's next-gen game console.

As expected, the Blu-ray player built into the PS3 will support both Dolby TrueHD as well as Dolby Digital. For games, the console will support interactive Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound.

Developed exclusively for high-def disc-based consumer media, Dolby TrueHD made waves with early adopters a few weeks back when it was first made available via a firmware upgrade to Toshiba's first-gen HD DVD players. Its inclusion in the PS3 should give the format a well-needed boost."

Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD Deliver a Premium Surround Sound Experience for PLAYSTATION(R) 3

Quote:
""In the age of high definition, games need to look and sound better than ever before," said John Griffin, Marketing Director, Games, Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital 5.1 will bring new levels of emotion and realism to movies and games. We think people will be amazed once they connect their PLAYSTATION 3 to an audio/video receiver or home theater system.""

Update my receiver for lossless audio from PS3? That's what I expected, so no suprise there.

But main worry is, Lossless surround ingame support.

Boy Sony is really making the PS3 an even better deal today aren't they? First they say the less expensive model will have HDMI too, then the pricecut on it, and now TrueHD as well!

SWEET!!!

I kinda expected this all along, I just thought this announcment was gonna say 6 channel analog output from ps3 or something, I always thought over HDMI 1.3 you could pass any audio codec.

I don't need uncompressed audio. A high bitrate AC3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) sound track will do just fine. I Just hope Sony throws on HDMI on the 20GB model, like they did for Japan. Then I would have no use for the 60gb version.

PS3 for Movies, Wii for Games.

The 20GB model will have HDMI. All PS3 models will have HDMI 1.3.

It is just that Japan so far as we know will be getting the 20GB model at like $410 - $420.

This is old.

It already Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD 2.0 ever since IFA Berlin 2006.

Nothing new but still amazing nonetheless.

This further assures my dream to send the XBOX 360 down to last place

I THINK DTS HD 2.0 is processed by the PS3.
And the PS3 can output (not process) DTS HD (master) surround to a DTS HD Master capable receiver.
Same goes with TrueHD.

PS. this is what I THINK.

Yup I agree.

For the non-believers, here is photographic proof (from IFA Berlin Expo 2006)

Speak for yourself.

If you'd actually heard some uncompressed audio for yourself you wouldn't be dismissing it out of hand like this.

Yeah, you keep telling yourself that.

Yeah, Metal Gear 4 and Devil May Cry 4, among other things, aren't worth anyone's time or interest.
