After Christmas, you're not going to watch it again until next year anyway. I can watch the DVD or even the VHS, and be satisfied with it. It's only 47 minutes! Besides, it's being broadcast on network TV repeatedly all this month, along with the other animated Christmas programs.
There are way too many specious assumptions here to take it seriously.

My previous copy was a DVD from over ten years ago, so I don't know how this compares to other releases in the interim. However, this looks and sounds great and is a vast improvement with one exception: there are multiple nasty DVNR ghosting artifacts. I didn't notice them until about 37 minutes in, in Bumble's cave. And then, boy, did I notice them.

The Rankin-Bass featurette was nice. Most of the rest of the extras were about a "4D" remake which I have zero interest in.

The biggest omission is the lack of "Fame and Fortune" and the original credits as extras. The GE ads from the original broadcast would've been nice, too.

This was the first time I'd seen the Peppermint Mine scene (apart from a B&W clip on YouTube) reincorporated, so that's cool.

Yeah, Rick Goldschmidt literally wrote the book on the history of Rankin/Bass:

$50-$100+ depending on softcover or hardcover. There's also a gorgeous 15th anniversary edition of this book which runs over $200 now on Amazon 3rd party sellers. Ugh. Shame there isn't a nice book covering these specials that's actually in print.

These Specials need a real restoration...not just a boost of colors.

The properties largely sell themselves to a casual audience, so the rights holders have never significantly invested in top-notch restorations. I was surprised at the quality of the new Rankin/Bass documentary, which secured interviews with active Hollywood talent. Good money clearly went into its creation.

It's the same reason why movies like Predator and Die Hard never get the best A/V treatment, because the casual movie fans buying those movies just aren't that demanding.

I watched this over the weekend and thought it looked excellent. Yukon's coat is blue and the extras also seem to prove that it is indeed blue, not green like on a previous release.

The documentary was quite interesting. I would have liked to see more behind-the-scenes stuff instead of talking heads but it was an entertaining feature and I certainly learned a few things I didn't know.

The 4D feature and the accompanying mini-doc are also very enjoyable. I highly recommend checking them out. It's a shame the 4D doc didn't include a 3D version because it's obvious there were tons of fun pop-out moments. Between the two docs and the full 4d feature I think those alone are worth purchasing this edition.

I'm not sure what they did in terms of "improved picture" but the colors were certainly very nice.

While no screens for Rudolph have popped up yet, here are screenshots for the new Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town.

It is also missing a word of dialogue on the stereo track. Ives says, "As -everyone feels." On the mono track, the word good is there. This also happened in the same spot on the first restored release in the 1990s. Also a nasty splice when the sleigh is taking off from the Island. The long version has always been missing a few frames. The CBS short version doesn't have a jump cut here.

I'm not following where the missing word of dialogue is located. What scene is this?

Right before skinny Santa eats, and before HOLLY JOLLY. The Elves are making toys. The missing frames occur as the sleigh is leaving the Isle of Misfit Toys.

Is this on the 50th anniversary release or the Universal release?

EDIT: Nevermind, I understand what you mean now, on the Universal release. Yeah, but like you said, that word has been missing many times before on various formats. Good thing the Mono mix has that word restored.

Incidentally people, this thread is for the 50th anniversary edition that was released by Classic Media/DreamWorks 4 years ago. All comments and things regarding the Universal Deluxe Edition go here:

Recently picked up the Universal Blu. After viewing + directly comparing w/ the 50th disc, I am all but certain the "newly improved picture quality" (as advertised on DE rear cover) is indeed the SAME master/transfer as the 50th, but with a better encode and no/minimal DNR, resulting in a (very) slight uptick in PQ.

I more or less agree. Universal seems to have given the specials from the set tighter, more transparent AVC encodes and very minor tweaks otherwise.

I'm thinking the 2018 Deluxe Edition is the best version to get? It's on a BD-50 disk and has more feature. Any information?

Yep. Fixed colors, proper mono soundtrack, much better extras; it's the one to get.

Is We're a Couple of Misfits synced to the correct animation on the 2018 blu ray set? (The CBS version with the mismatched and redited Fame & Fortune footage always upsets me).

I have the version of this that's part of The Original Christmas Specials Collection, and the video and audio seem fine to me. I haven't watched it in some time, but from what I recall everything was intact. Am I missing something, or is my mind simply playing tricks on me?

Is the US Blu-ray region free since the UK Version is hard to get?
