Default Vizio, Sony BDP issue...

Newbie question time!

Neighbor has a Vizio (not sure of the model) and bought a Blu-ray player yesterday.....

Disconnecting EVERYTHING from the T.V., we can't get the T.V. to recognize the HDMI cable (that it came with)

We'll get the Audio AFTER we figure out the video, but here is what I know.

Vizio looks to be a 1080i/720p

Blu-ray player is a Sony, and I think it said "bx8" or something on the front.... not sure.

We connected an rca cable, and it would show the setup options, but for inputs, it wouldn't let me select HDMI, and move to the next screen.... it would let me select Component though.

how can we get it to accept the HDMI (His Vizio has 2 HDMI inputs on it)

I verified it wasn't the cable by trying one of mine.....

If all else fails, I guess I could give him a set of component cables to get 1080i with, but I'd like to get him up and running with the HDMI

His BD player is from Costco or Sam's I think.

Anyway, I have a Vizio and a Sony BD player. The connection for me was simple: just took the cable from the BD into the TV, changed the input to the correct HDMI, and I had it.

This is going to sound stupid: did you turn the BD player on? My TV takes a few moments to change from "No Signal" blue screen to the BD player Home screen.

Did you try both HDMI inputs?

How are you changing/selecting the inputs? Via the remote, or via the TV buttons? I just press the TV button until the correct HDMI comes on.

What do you mean it "wouldn't let [you] select HDMI"? Was it blacked out or something? Did the inputs just skip the HDMI choices?

Could be an issue with his TV....

O.K.

He probably got it at Cosco... he goes there a lot.

Yeah, Blue screen that says "No Signal!!"

How long does yours take to switch to the BDP screen?????

I'm pretty sure we waited for AWHILE....

We unplugged everything, plugged in the HDMI, then turned on the Blu-ray player, and during the setup screen (that we could see when we plugged in an rca cable, and switched to that T.V. input) HDMI was blacked out during setup...

We tried both HDMI1 and HDMI2, and we switched inputs by cycling through the inputs via the button directly on the T.V.

Nothing with either HDMI1 or HDMI2, but perhaps we need to wait longer.... but it seems like we waited for a LONG time.

Anything else I should consider, or is time to go to component cables for him????

EDIT:

Thanks for the help!

I didn't mean to imply you should wait for minutes. My typical practice is: 1) turn on TV, 2) change input to HDMI, 3) turn on BD player.

Takes probably 20 seconds AT MOST for it to show up on the TV. Just depends on the player.

But I will say NONE of my inputs are blacked out. I have nothing plugged into Component or Composite inputs, but they're still ALL selectable.

I think it's a TV issue...any chance he can take it back?

Which setup screen are you talking about -- the BD player?

Can you, while the TV is in TV/cable input, go the menu and see if you have to activate HDMI or something? Sounds lame, but maybe his TV has some odd function like that.

Hmm.

Have you tried connecting anyting else via HDMI yet? Sounds like a TV issue, I had a similar issue with my vizio, but I would try bringing over your Blu-Ray player ( if you are that nice of a neighbor ) and try connecting that. If that doesnt work, he is probably SOL.

I have a couple of PS3s, so I could lend him one if it works, so he can take the player back (if it's the player) but it's probably the T.V. (which he has had since before he moved here, which has been about a year I believe)

He probably can't take the T.V. back at this point.....

I have a set of Monster Component cables I'll give him.... if they work, he can have them

We certainly left it on for more than 20 seconds though

Maybe since it's a somewhat older TV it can't accept/recognize a 1080p signal (which I assume is what the player is sending). Can you change the output options on the player to either 1080i or 720p? Perhaps you can hook it up to another TV (possibly yours) and change the output settings. Maybe then the HDMI input will recognize the signal and you can be connected that way.

Just a thought.

well.... I gave him a set of component cables, and it's sending 1080i now..... either way, I did a side by side with his Planet Earth DVD, and my Blu-ray, and he said he couldn't tell the difference..... He actually said he doesn't plan on buying Blu-rays...... nonetheless, it's hooked up... what he does with it is his business

you should be able to just connect an HDMI cable and set up, no need for composite, component cables etc.

Does the BD player give an option for selecting optimal picture automatically, or you get no screen at all?

The HDMI inputs are probably busted on the TV.

I bet if he turned his sharpness all the way down, he would be able to tell a difference.

When i had my vizio this happened once after I brought my ps3 to my bothers house, when I came back to my house I tried plugging the ps3 back in I got the same problem you were mentioning, it read no signal when I switched it to hdmi 1, I called vizio and they said this happens with some of their models and he walked me through some settings and touch up a few buttons and BAM it was working...
