Crazy this is going to have a 120fps mode. Curious to see how it performs.

Apparently early previews state the game is just put in a 120hz container probably with VRR.

So if that’s true & you own a compatible HDMI 2.1 TV, the game should run Dynamic 4K with FPS in the 70-80 range.

The biggest advantage wouldn’t be the extra frames, it would be the halving of input lag which I’m all for.

I know it’s not deal breaking but it’s fascinating games are still launching without photo modes and putting them in later. I love snapping screen grabs my first playthrough because it’s a while before I get back to a game usually.

I thought the game was locked in 30 fps for 4k and 60 fps for performance mode.. Did that change?

Preordered the game and Ragnarok dual sense controller. Been playing the original as a refresher. That game is a masterpiece!

120, that's double 60 fps, so they're going to have to take the resolution down to 720p maybe. I don't know, but it's going to look rough I bet compared to the amazing 4K visuals.

Photo mode is an add on option, so that's why most of these developers are leaving it as an afterthought, since it doesn't impact the gameplay unfortunately, which they're focused on completing in time for the release. I'd love to have some of these cool filter options for the main gameplay, along with the cool camera views.

Remember it's a 120fps target. Mostly it would be like Miles Morales and other PS5 offerings which hit around 80-100fps with VRR TV's. It's still great stuff for PS5 and I welcome it to every new game that releases.

Correct. Might as well put this here. I posted it in the main PS5 thread a couple days ago but it obviously makes more sense here.

https://www.ign.com/articles/god-of-...ce-mode-on-ps5

Quote:
Thanks to a graphics mode options breakdown from Press Start, it's been confirmed that God of War Ragnarok supports 120hz. In a practical sense, this means that it's designed to run with an unlocked framerate that aims to stay above 60fps. In a statement to IGN, Sony said that framerate will vary based on gameplay elements and the world location.

The modes listed in the report are as follows:

Favor Resolution: 4K/30 FPS Locked
Favor Performance: 60 FPS Locked
Favor Resolution (High Frame Rate On): 4K/40 FPS Locked (HDMI 2.1 required)
Favor Performance (High Frame Rate On): Syncs with 120hz (HDMI 2.1 required)
As always with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, your television will need to support HDMI 2.1 in order to use the 120hz option. The HDMI 2.1-exclusive 40 FPS option, meanwhile, is very similar to the one we saw in last month's The Last of Us Part I.

Hopefully by the end of this PS5 generation of games, they'll be able to hit 240 frames per second consistently, for the best responsiveness. 60 fps is good enough for me as the end target. I'm okay with 30 fps, but if given a choice of equal visuals or near similar, I'd pick 60 fps.

I remember in the old PS2, PS1 days, 24 fps was the goal.

-PS1 launched with 12 games in NA. 5 were 60 fps. (Yes a lot of 2D but still 60fps)
-PS2 launched with 26 games in NA. 21 were 60 fps. Most were 3d.

PS1 and 2 had a lot more 60 fps games than people remember.

PS360 gen was when frames started to really plummet across the board.

That's kind of interesting as I would have never guessed that many. Obviously as graphics got better, the frame rates dropped. For a while, maybe we really didn't know any better as we got used to 30 FPS being the standard, but unfortunately companies were never able to make chips and such powerful enough to handle the load. We are getting there again it seems, even with this gen being inconsistent so far, but it's taken a while.

And more devs moved to Unreal (and other middleware instead of rolling their own and being intimate with it) and in turn using it for every type of game imaginable when each version usually has issues with certain types of games. UE4 for example is what was used with Gotham Knights and it’s historically not well suited for open world without a lot of optimization and we see the result of that. Whereas UE5 is better suited for open world.

Not surprising, but the reviews are stellar. Something like 63 reviews so far, all positive.

Edit: notably, the Eurogamer reviewer said they completed their playthrough using the 120fps mode. They said it was great.

The battle between this and Elden Ring for GOTY is going to be brutal! It'll be like GOW 2018 and RDR2 all over again.

Im confused. On PSN there is a $60 standard version that says PS4/PS5 and a $70 that says the same. What is the difference?

Is the 60.00 version the PS4 version?

I would assume so but it says PS4/PS5

This is reminding me of the Horizon situation but that game only said PS4 (with a digital PS5 upgrade)

Personally not going to be able to play this game for a while, but an unlocked 4K frame rate mode is interesting. I have a feeling this is more fuel to indicate that a PS5 Pro might be in the works or they're priming for a PC release as an alternate possibility. The thing though is that if a PS5 Pro does come out, i'm curious to see how it comes together.
