Default Friday the 13th (1980)

I searched and I can't believe there isn't a single thread just to talk about the original movie in the long-running slasher series!

I'll start just to say that I seen this tonight (which is Friday the 13th) at Regal for the special one night showing. There were actually two screenings. I went to the earlier one and there were about 21 people there (including myself). The next showing I took a peek at the seating chart before it started and the auditorium was nearly completely booked with about 30 people (not including any late arrivals). Both showings were in one of the theatre's smaller auditoriums.

The presentation was top notch. Nice clear image (with film grain!) and sound. The sound was really loud when it needed to be! It was listed as R rated and I presume that to be the case.

I've never seen this in the theatre before so this was a nice treat! I love early slashers like this and this one is a classic! Nice performances from the cast, especially from Betsy Palmer. I love the creepy cinematography, that amazing music score and of course the great makeup effects by Tom Savini! And that whopper of an ending that has haunted me since I first seen it in the early 80's! There was a nice round of applause at the end from the people in the theatre. Good stuff!

I was able to see this at a nearby Regal as well. There were about 30 people in the audience for the earlier showing and fortunately they played it on a large screen and quite loud. This was my first time seeing the film in the theater as well and was the only Friday title I hadn't seen on the big screen before. My friends and I all enjoyed it and I hope to see more older films get a release in the theaters.

I also saw this at Regal last night. Not my fave in the series. But how many times can you see the original Friday The 13th in theaters on a Friday the 13th? 😂

I really don't know. It did look great though. I only noticed one film artifact and there was one short scene that looked blurry. It was the scene near the end when Alice approached the canoe.
[Show spoiler]The closeup of Alice's face at the end when she was in the hospital
looked amazingly detailed! You can see all the pores in her skin!

There's another Friday the 13th coming in October(!). I hope Regal shows Part 2!

This was the first Friday film I saw in the theater and had to "sneak" in at the time due to my age. I watched the Shout release 2 years ago and it held up really well so I would certainly see it in the theater again if given the chance.

I watched this on Friday. It's still my favorite of the series. This movies reputation is all about the gore, but it the atmosphere that makes it great. A creepy little campfire story.

Yes, I agree the movie has a creepy atmosphere. I feel the film's low budget really adds to that. The gore doesn't scare me like it did when I was a kid. I used to hide my eyes behind a pillow when I knew something bad was about to happen! Lol. But the shocker ending gets me every time. I know what's coming, but my heart still beats fast with anticipation!
I have a fondness for the first three movies in the series.

I enjoy the original Friday the 13th, but the movie always fizzles out around the end of the second act or so... they hold onto shots of essentially nothing for large portions of the movie. The sequence with Alice just standing around aimlessly looking for something to do is painful to watch. The intent is to be suspenseful, but I find the film rarely is. That's just one example... a large chunk of the movie is downright boring, for me. It isn't until Pamela Voorhees comes in that it picks back up. Of course, the ending is iconic. Hasn't been topped in the franchise yet.

Currently watching the 6 hour documentary (Crystal Lake Memories). It’s a really well made Doc with loads of input from the actors who appeared in each film. Sadly, no Crispin Glover.

The last time I saw the original film at the cinema (a Friday night screening last year), you could tell one or two cinemagoers in the screen room weren't used to the slower build-up pace in this film
[Show spoiler](ie. faster scene setting with a quicker build-up, compared to this film taking it's the time (in a good way),
and used to more gorier modern-day horror films, with one person looking visibly uncomfortable (like they were getting impatient with the film).

One of the one-off screenings of the original Friday the 13th I've seen at the local cinema began with the UK 'X' certificate. The screening I went to last year began with the UK '18' certificate (although it wasn't the most recent UK '18' certificate).

I was shocked (in a good way, but also not against the show, which is my all-time favourite) to see a familiar Friday the 13th face in a recurring role on Knots Landing, Betsy Palmer. However, if she had played a Mrs. Voorhees-type character, I don't think she would have been scared by the male character as much!

I didn't mind that a couple of the bumping-off scenes with two characters
[Show spoiler](Brenda and Ned)
were a bit vague, both happening off-screen. They're still among my favourite scenes in the film.

I've still to get a book about the filming of the original film, On Location in Blairstown: The Making of Friday the 13th.

I've seen this many times, but never in a theater. I was supposed to go to a Midnight showing of it Halloween night in 1992, but heavy thunderstorms prevented me from leaving the house.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the snake scene is completely unnecessary.

You know the canoe scene at the end of the movie? Yeah, I was like 13 years old when I first saw this and I was frozen with fear during that scene. I was like WTF?!?!

I would love to hear people's theatre experiences with that shock ending as they saw it back in 1980 when the movie was new!

I see Betsy Palmer a lot on the old game shows like Password, What's My Line, I've Got a Secret and To Tell The Truth.

In the movie, I found it disturbing that
[Show spoiler]Mrs. Voorhees was driving around in her jeep with the murdered body of Annie in the seat next to her
!

Most of the films have merit to me. I like the first 6 the most. I think I was 9 when I saw the first one on VHS. The benefits of having a older sister as a babysitter.

I first watched Friday the 13th on a VHS taping. It was on late one night and I wasn't allowed to stay up to watch it, so I set up the timer on the VCR. Unfortunately my tape ran out right before Jason jumped out of the lake. So on my first viewing I thought the movie had a somewhat peaceful ending.

My first viewing was also on VHS. My brother and I bought a VCR around 1982/83 and our mom set up an account at Video Library.

Great, great film. Has the best jump scare in all of filmdom, only rivalled, perhaps, by Carrie.
