Technically there's no colon in the title. It's like Into Darkness and Beyond.

You could argue if he did that, he wouldn't be there to do the thing that prevents it so it would all happen again. It doesn't hold water as a counter argument though, because that can't be since that would also mean because Picard never gets into the Nexus in the new timeline, so he wouldn't be there to go back in time to stop Sauron in the first place. Since he did both stay out of the Nexus and stop Sauron, the paradox argument against Sauron doing as I suggest can't be valid.

Or, maybe Picard is still in the Nexus, and everything after for him is all illusion. But even if he did get out, he's also still in there are well since Guinan is in both too.

So Kirk is also still in the Nexus, only one is dead. It's just that the one that is left can only exist as part of the Nexus now.

Or if Picard never got out, was Kirk dying just an illusion to him and Kirk is still very much alive in the Nexus?

I bought the Lursa and B’etor action figures from GENERATIONS recently and the “limited edition” stamp was in the 90,000 range. Which means the studio will have made more money off selling Lursa and B’etor action figures for this movie than they will selling it on 4K disc.

Nonsense. This is a great Christmas movie.

the tng movies aren't the best trek has to offer (as much as i love first contact and consider it one of the best st films), but watching generations in 4k would be amazing. i hold this film in slightly higher regard than most trekkers do just for how relatively small scale the story is, plus i even happen to own a copy of the expanded soundtrack on cd signed by dennis mccarthy so i suppose i'm obligated to at least like this movie.

Generations was actually the first Trek I saw in theaters. I've seen every film after.

I certainly do as well, but…

A story spanning two time periods, passing of the crew torch, closing the B’Etor and Lursa storylines, bookending of “Family”, culmination of Data’s series-long quest for emotions, ultimate end of the Enterprise D, destruction of an entire galaxy, Kirk and Picard together for the one and only time…

I think our definitions of “small scale” differ a tad.

First one I saw in a theatre was ST:V 1989 was a great year for film; Ghostbusters 2, Licence to Kill, Lethal Weapon 2, Back to the Future 2, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Indy Last Crusade, The Burbs, Batman, Parenthood etc etc. Don’t see the same quality these days…

i say small scale due to the overall stakes not being some universe ending calamity like first contact or nemesis. all the stuff mentioned are definitely huge things for anyone that followed stng but they're nothing like stopping the borg from rewriting human history to assimilate earth before extraterrestrial contact is made.

STV was my first Trek movie in the theater, also. I got hooked on TNG in the summer of '88 and thus began a lifelong Trek obsession. That was a fantastic year for movies, I agree!

While "Generations" does a lot to make it a big-screen event, it still can't completely escape its television origins. Think about the introduction of the Enterprise-D in this movie. Its big reveal is from behind, arriving at the station as if this is just another weekly episode of the series.

That's a good point. Compare that to the reveal of the Enterprise-E in First Contact which gets a wonderful beauty shot in front of a nebula (and of course the infamous reveal of the Connie refit in TMP).

Yep, it’s like they just programmed in the same motion control passes.

Budget. Every VFX shot in the movie we got was fought for by the production team. Even then, they slipped in stock shots from VI - not just the BoP explosion, but the Excelsior warp-by, the Praxis explosion for the Armagosa implosion, the BoP cloaking. And of course the TNG stock shot used for Picard's Captain's Log.

It's the quality and lighting that sell the shot as theatrical. None of the series' (TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT) was quite as artistic.

Yes, I've mentioned the luvverly lighting several times, but it's still weird to have all that gorgeousness pasted on top of stock camera moves. And that D just doesn't do it for me, it's a uniquely un-cinematic ship in the annals of Trek IMO. It's so squat and top loaded, almost like it was designed for 4:3 TVs.

BUT I'm quite sure I'm gonna enjoy the heck out of the UHD, I can't hate this film. I can't hate any Trek film, Into Darkness got close but I've mellowed on that.

Is it too much to hope they went back to the elements for this shot and re-comped it in 4K?

Yes. Besides they did go back to the original VistaVision elements ILM created in 1987 for that particular shot. So it is "first generation", just really grainy because it was older.

Oh, forgot they also re-used the initial saucer separation shot and lost the elements afterwards! The TNG HD remaster had to use a CG re-creation for that particular shot in Encounter At Farpoint, The Arsenal of Freedom, and The Best of Both Worlds Part II.

I always loved the explosion effect that they did for the Enterprise warp core breach, no idea if it was practical or digital but it always impressed me.

That is also ILM stock footage - same explosion as the Grissom in The Search For Spock with a shockwave added - which was ILM stock to begin with (from the Star Wars movies).

The film has issues, but my goodness it moves at a good clip! And under two hours too.
