Default Plasma Screen Burn Scare...Yikes!

So I watched Kung Fu Hustle with a buddy of mine on my 50" Pioneer Elite 1080p plasma. I got really tired afterwards and forgot to turn off my tv. I went to sleep and woke up about 10 hours later. The static image of the blu-ray movie menu was on the screen the whole time!

I figured it was just image retention, but a week later, I noticed it was still there!!! I seriously wanted to cry cuz I LOVE my tv (hell, I'm still paying for it). Good news is, it finally went away after a couple more weeks. Talk about scary though. Needless to say, I'm going to try to be more careful. Phew...

Yea...i've worried about that with mine too!
I set my TV to turn off after 3 hours if no buttons are pressed. If you don't touch anything it will give you a reminder 1 minute before it goes off. I've only had to press a button twice so far. Not that hard and saves me from worrying if I fall asleep watching TV.......which I have done alot.
The TV has turned itself off several times..without that setting I would have probably had the same problem as you!

That's a horror story. I really do like Plasma TV's; but that's one of the reasons why I prefer LCD's. Pioneer's rock though!! ...at least you don't have to worry about dead pixels, lol

My tv only shuts itself off if their is no signal from the input it is set on. It has a game mode too, but I don't use it. Maybe I should. Well at least the screen burn didn't stay.

You don't need the game mode. Go under the same settings where you turned the [no signal off] on and it's under the same one.

It's on page 64 of your manual.

No Operation Off (AV mode only)
The system automatically enters standby when no operation is performed for three hours.
1. Press Home Menu
2. Select "Power Control"
3. Select "No operation off"
4. Select Enable
I have that enabled on mine....like I said...it has saved me quite a few times!

Plasmas can have dead cells. I've seen them on all different types of plasmas.

I also have a plasma. Panasonic. Plasmas shouldn't burn in if they are broken in right. I took a copy of Planet Earth on Blu-ray. I turned to to the second chapter of Shallow Seas (lots of color and movement) and turned my player on to repeat chapter. I left it on there for 8 hrs a day for a week and a half. I play Madden, watch letter boxed movies and the like, I have never had so much as a retained image or burn in. If you do that your plasma will be excellent. I have seen DVD menus get left on broken in plasmas for 8 hrs and no burn in.

It will just 'retain'... it won't burn in (at least it won't unless you leave it on there of a year).

If you get major retention issues, you can just use a 'flasher' type thingy that flashes solid colors (no patterns) on the screen really fast over and over and let that go for a few mins then come back and almost all retained images will be gone.

I've gamed on my Panasonic 50" for many years now and I've never had an issue with even retained images, much less burn in. We're talking some days with up to 16hours of marathon gaming with the same static interface on the screen (rare days, but happens sometimes with new titles, also I used to have the PC hooked to it to game too). Closest I came to any real retention was leaving the Neverwinter Nights Toolset up on it for a week straight (didnt' want to risk anything with the uber module I was making). Saw the interfact frame (only the lower right corner of it where the sphere thing was) for about three days after that. Then it was gone... just gradually faded away.

Doesn't your Pioneer have a built in white-wash feature? Most high end plasmas do.

It is my understanding that the Black Level deminishes after each white-wash and this process is not recommended after three processes. Anyone know for certain what negative consequences result from this white-wash? [Jim]

This was the deciding factor why I went DLP. I'm a gamer and have 2 boys who are starting to get into gaming, too. I really don't want an FPS cursor, health bar, ammo count, etc. burning into the screen

Image retention/burn in has always been a bit of a fear of mine. When watching regular (standard def) TV I do not have it 'stretched' to fit the screen because it horribly distorts the image. So now I have a bar down either side of my screen. Also, I wish HD networks - National Geographic for example - would lose the little network symbol that's visible on the lower right corner. I may be jumping at shadows but I don't want a little box showing up on my screen

That's good to know, thanks. I guess I should research it a bit.

No, that's incorrect. The white wash, pixel orbiter and inversion features of plasmas should be regularly used to help prolong the life of the tv. They will not cause any problems for plasmas, but rather help reduce phosphor burn-ins. Manufacturers actually encourage the regular use of these features.

Cool

It is only called image retention. Burn-in is when the image is permanent, and that was an issue in plasma models 3-4 yrs. ago, not today. Even though Pioneers don't have anti-retention features ieixel shift(so I was told), with today's technology image burn is a thing of the past. One would really have to abuse the screen with static images on for weeks at a time to do any permanent damage.

Image retention still happens but it's only in extreme cases in current gen plasma displays.. It's really a none issue now like other have said with a properly brokenin display.

While true the difference is if a Plasma has a forzen pixel you'll see it in the first 90 days or so.. The LCD on the other hand can have a pixel or a number of them go anytime in it's lifetime.
