Default Drowning By Numbers (1988) 4K UHD coming from Severin on May 30

Quote:
In between his celebrated THE BELLY OF AN ARCHITECT and THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE & HER LOVER, writer/director Peter Greenaway – “one of the most distinctive, provocative talents of his generation” (The Guardian) – shocked/delighted international audiences with this slyly deranged black comedy classic: Oscar® nominee Dame Joan Plowright (ENCHANTED APRIL), four-time BAFTA Award nominee Juliet Stevenson (TRULY MADLY DEEPLY) and two-time Golden Globe nominee Joely Richardson (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) star as three generations of women who murder their husbands in an unsettling salvo of sumptuous visuals, macabre capers and numerical mischief. Bernard Hill (THE LORD OF THE RINGS, TITANIC) co-stars in this “fascinating brain buster of very bad manners” (Entertainment Weekly), now featuring a new 4K scan from the original negative personally supervised by Greenaway.

I pre-ordered this lightning fast! Now, let's get some Greenaway out here!

"The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" and "The Baby of Macon" would be great places to start!

Really liked this, scope for an upgrade. I watched the existing Blu UK last year and it was a good viewing experience.

The extras were great. As a conscious experimenter of this form of art and a forthright iconoclast, I found Greenaway's take on the material extremely fascinating.

He starts by dismissing Hollywood film making as largely a "Bedtime story", go out for a cinema visit in the evening and it ushers you to sleep as a pacifying, largely passive experience.

I'd never thought if it in that way before but what he says is, in part, true and the way he expresses his ideas with no little personal charm, I didn't find it pretentious or elitist at all.

So this is a newly recorded commentary it seems.

.....AND.... Greenaway himself designed the cover art! Very happy about this release, indeed.

Yes, the Peter Greenaway interview and audio commentary are new. The interview was recorded when he was in Los Angeles for the American Cinematheque retrospective and the audio commentary was recorded later after he returned to Holland.

The extras and how Severin were able to get them are discussed in today's episode of Severin's podcast:
https://severin-films-podcast.libsyn...ing-by-numbers

The discussion of the extras starts at 00:11:27

Thanks for the heads up!

Pricey on the Severin website, but I went ahead and pre-ordered. I like to support boutique companies when they go out on a limb with quality releases of great but less known films.

Plus, don't want to risk missing out if their run is small!

Awesome news! I would love to see more Greenaway films on 4k. Hopefully, "A Zed & Two Noughts" gets consideration.

NICE! I was in the audience for that, for this very film (first time I'd seen it, blew me away, waiting for a good Blu-Ray release ... full circle) the topic of his films finding stateside distribution was something Greenaway lamented, but it looks like he can keep his secrets.

Definite pre-order with Severin's Danza Macabra box set.

I don't know if I've ever seen a Greenaway film, but I loved that trailer, so I might blind-buy this.

Visually, he's outstanding. He's a former painter turned documentary film maker turned director. His movies always look sumptious. It's the stories he tell in his movies that can put people off. Expect viscera, nudity, strange music and brutal violence.

What fascinates me with Greenaway is the intellectualism on display and the weird coldness of his erotic scenes. There's always an inscrutable additional layer of intent that may - or may not - reveal itself upon multiple viewings.
