Maybe this is better suited for a display subforum, I don't know.
Point is, Seinfeld is an older show than Friends, but on TBSHD (for example), it's full widescreen and looks great - no distortion, pulling, etc. Then Friends is on, and it's distorted, pulled, etc. Who are the geniuses behind this? |

because friends is the full widescreen display stretched to fit the 16:9 screen... Seinfeld is cropped at the top and bottom to "fit" the widescreen display. Next time its on, switch back and forth from SD to HD and you will see what I'm talkin bout... I checked this one out myself

Coincidently the everyone dating everyone thing is hurting my support of The Office. Primarily a year ago when it was Michael/Jan, Jim/Pam, Andy/Angela/Dwight, it was smelling like deja vu. |

yep, wife watches friends, I catch a few on TBS HD when she has it turned there,
![]() Seinfeld is the top comedy show of the 90's, maybe even of the 00's. I don't know if anything has come close. As much as I like the office, I still like Seinfeld better. |

If TBS HD and TNT HD are not given proper true 16x9 masters, they will vertically stretch 4x3 material to fill the 16x9 screen. In fact, every Turner cable network does this with Cartoon Network HD being the worst out of the group.
Seinfeld was recently remastered and reframed at true 16x9. The sides of the frame had extra picture information which meant they could crop the top and bottom without completely ruining the composition so Sony went ahead and remastered every episode this way. Friends, Home Improvement, Family Guy, Just Shoot Me, and a lot of movies have been vertically stretched to fill the screen. 2 months ago, TBS HD ended the practice of airing commercials veritically stretched. When a 4x3 commerical airs, black bars watermarked TBS HD appear on the sides. Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl was broadcast as 4x3 stretched and looked pretty bad but TBS HD got a new true 16x9 version of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion which looked great. As for Cartoon Network...the only things they have ever aired true 16x9 are Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Star Wars; The Clone Wars. However, these are first run airings only. Meaning, you get one chance to see them in true 16x9...after that its 4x3 streched to fit 16x9. And when the kids are out of the pool and Adult Swim begins, forget any hope of true 16x9. The Venture Brothers, Metalacoplyse, Squidbillies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force are all produced in HD, aired with black bars on the SD channel, [B]and[/B} are broadcast vertically streteched to fill 16x9 with the black bars intact!. I don't even watch the Cartoon Network HD feed, I just sitck with the SD feed. |
