I really hope there's going to be a physical release too.
Potemkine has confirmed that they are working on releasing all 14 films by Von Trier with new restorations this year in France. Hopefully they're teaming up with a British label.

The new Dogville restoration has a warm blanket tint applied to the entire film that I don't find entirely convincing. All the white (even in the title cards) is now closer to yellow/orange. The 4K resto plays in 25fps also, not sure what the native frame rate is but it was shot on HD digital cameras.

I've attached a few comparison shots of the 4K resto vs an older 1080 copy I assume is from the original DI.

[Show spoiler]

The warm finish seems to run counter to the sparse theatrical aesthetic but I seem to remember that it's closer to how it looked at the cinema. I'm happy with my English friendly 1080 for now but I might upgrade.

MUBI already have those restorations available in different territories. There’s 4K versions of The Element of Crime, Epidemic, Europa, The Idiots, Dancer in the Dark and Dogville with the rest of his theatrical work in HD.

Mubi UK had Element of Crime (same resto but only in 1080) with the Curzon logo, so if CAE also picked up the other films then they might put out a boxset. Then if MUBI release The Kingdom trilogy the long wait for complete Von Trier on Blu will be over!

Surprised Mubi haven't released the complete Kingdom series yet given it's all been restored and put up to stream.

Semi Mubi-related - in a move that I think will please @CelestialAgent, Mubi Go (Mubi's "free" (subscription based) weekly cinema ticket for a pre-determined film, for the uninitiated) is now partnering with Picturehouse Cinemas.

Not a MUBI subscriber currently, but I did initially get into them when they were doing 3 months free with Picturehouse membership back in 2016 or so. So will they limit MUBI Go to only films they know Picturehouse are going to show or will it vary each week? I feel like Picturehouse have been improving this year compared to last year, lots of cool reissues and seasons (they’re currently doing ones for Ben Wheatley and Wes Anderson), more new releases including the occasional Netflix/Apple TV+ (ODEON have been getting less of the arthouse titles although Vue have a few with BFI Presents). Although their pricing structure can be a bit awkward now I’m no longer under 25 (have to go on Mondays or weekday matinees and avoid weekends for cheaper tickets), I do think it’s a better deal with free Discover/Rediscover and teas and coffees. So I feel more okay with going to more of the reissues, even if I could just get the Blu-ray cheap and watch from home (so I end up buying less discs.) The counterpoint is the free screenings can get busy (or it’s sold out but there’s still free seats from people not showing up!), and sometimes people will talk during the film or walk out saying it’s the worst film they’ve ever seen! By comparison, the paid screenings tend to be pretty empty - and I still can feel bad about paying £5-8 more because I missed the free screening if I’m busy on that night.

Decision to Leave was also only BD, I feel like Benedetta only went 4K because Capelight beat them to the punch by several months. Not really expecting 4K for new world cinema titles.

It's usually more that they choose a (usually arthouse) film that week and will list the cinemas nearby that are showing it. If Picturehouse happen to be showing it that week then they'll be included, if not, they won't. Curzon are my usual haunt, but there have been a handful of occasions where they weren't showing that week's film so I've had to go elsewhere (but I'm lucky enough to live in London which means this isn't a major issue).

The last few months' selections can be found here: https://mubi.com/go/gb

Mubi Go is more expensive than Mubi, but at £16 a month it isn't too bad if you can go every week (works out at around £4 per film plus the MUBI subscription which is usually £11 per month if you don't get an offer).

Appreciate that won't be the case for everyone though!

There's a promotion on the streaming service now if anyone was considering, 4 months for £4 .

Looks like it's just North America... plus more...

Mubi has acquired 11 films by Lars von Trier for North America, including the director’s Dogme 95 entry The Idiots. It will release a new uncut 4K restoration of the film June 16 theatrically timed to its 25th anniversary, followed by an exclusive streaming release.

Other titles, most newly restored, include Dogville (2003), The Five Obstructions (2003), Manderlay (2005), The Boss of it All (2006), Breaking the Waves (1996), the Europa Trilogy (The Element of Crime, Epidemic, Europa), Antichrist (2009) and Dancer in the Dark (2000). Some are streaming on Mubi now, others will roll out on through September 2025.

Mubi Picks Up Molly Manning Walker's Feature 'How To Have Sex' Ahead Of Cannes Debut

Mubi acquired new restorations of von Trier series, The Kingdom Seasons 1 and 2, along with its latest season, The Kingdom Exodus in 2022.

TrustNordisk brokered the deal with Mubi.

The Idiots, which premiered at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, was made under the Dogme 95 school started by von Trier and other Danish filmmakers. It centers on a commune, whose members aim to disrupt bourgeois society by spontaneously feigning physical or mental disabilities in public. The darkly comic film was censored when it was released. It’s been remaster by Zentropa Post Production.

Mubi, a streaming service, distributor and more recently a producer recently added over 50 features from the Sony Pictures’ library to its U.S. platform. The mix of studio and arthouse fare includes Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence, The Last Picture Show by Peter Bogdanovich and films from Wes Anderson, Pedro Almodovar and Guillermo Del Toro.

Its productions include South Korea’s Oscar short-listed Decision To Leave by Park Chan-wook. Sundance and Berlin acquisition Passages, by Ira Sachs, opens in August.

Medusa Deluxe - 9th October

Quote:
The audaciously original debut from writer-director Thomas Hardiman, MEDUSA DELUXE is a bold, camp and unique take on the murder mystery. After a stylist is found dead at a hairdressing competition, the remaining competitors try to uncover the killer over the course of an evening, in this vivacious and absurdly comic ensemble drama. Rivalry and mistrust build as the remaining group of determined contestants suspect that someone may be trying to rig the competition, by gruesomely picking off its entrants. Hardiman’s extravagant whodunnit features stunning cinematography from Academy Award nominee Robbie Ryan (The Favourite), an electronic score by Koreless and dazzling hair designs by renowned stylist Eugene Souleiman.

Extras: Q&A with director Thomas Hardiman, Short Films "Pitchblack Panacea" and "Radical Hardcore"

Interesting, I wonder why just North America. Perhaps Curzon still have some of his films here? A lot of them aren't though and presumably up for grabs.

Not that I'm very interested in von Trier. I've never been a fan, but did pick up Breaking the Waves to see if that'd change my mind, though still haven't been in the mood to watch it (and similarly mildly curious to see Dancer in the Dark, and possibly The Kingdom too as I remember enjoying Stephen King's US remake). I think I was mostly put off by seeing The Idiots and Dogville in my formative film-watching years - you can thank my Media Studies teachers for that - and the hype surrounding Antichrist, Melancholia and Nymphomaniac put me off even more.

Mubi are releasing Decision to Leave on 4K in the US on October 3rd. I imagine they'll be releasing it in the UK as well.

Much to the delight of folks like me who waited for a while for a UHD but then decided to just buy it on Blu-ray. It would be a bit of a kick in the nuts if they do decide to give it a 4K release here.

I guess that's one way of fixing the subtitle issue. Thankfully, I didn't get the Blu-ray yet.

I remember complaining about the subtitles, then you all said actually they were fine, then I lost interest in the conversation and never checked back - what did you conclude? I believe I thought they were difficult to read, fast and had too much text on the screen.

Glad to contribute

I did it once before: bought the US Sony release of Orlando, which unusually was region locked (not a problem for me). Then a bit after that they released an identical version over here, but region B.

Now I have the UHD, I want to get rid of the US disk but of course the UK one is tons cheaper over here and even though the US one is OOP and goes for silly money, no one wants it
