Forget it. Criterion aren't releasing it. Rosenbaum confirmed this recently in an interview posted on YouTube.

Starts at 5:20.

That Indiegogo turned out to be a farce but it fits in with all the other ways Welles got screwed by financiers for his films and vice-versa, so in many ways it’s appropriate that it would occur even 30 years after his death to us suckers who donated. I’m surprised Rosenbaum didn’t mention the most obvious reason Criterion won’t release it and that is the Indiegogo campaign. As long as they don’t release it no copies have to be supplied to the people who donated. Something that would cost Criterion, or those who started the campaign, a decent amount of money. It would basically start out in the hole financially. Who wants to take that hit now five years after its release?

That's bummer. Hoping at least some halfway decent label releases it to disc.

Except he flat out says "They didn't tell me they are definitely not going to do it" so not really any confirmation.

I hope it does come out at some point. They still owe me a blu-ray.

I was waiting for these type of responses. Denial is big around here.

He was a consultant on the film. Don't you think he would know if it was being released or not? Did they wait years to release The Irishman? Why have they waited so long?

The most likely explanation is that they aren't releasing it and don't intend to.

This should be moved to the Wish List section, sadly.

It's clear this isn't forthcoming, but there's no way Rosenbaum is onto something when he speculates it has to do with political correctness. Criterion's catalogue is loaded with movies that make WIND look like a piker in that regard.

The more boring probability of what is holding this up is plain old possessiveness on Netflix's part. And it's a shame, too, because it sounds like the Royal Road guys have curated hours worth of supplemental material for a potential boutique home video treatment. Can you imagine a release that includes THEY'LL LOVE ME WHEN I'M DEAD, A FINAL CUT FOR ORSON, HOPPER/WELLES, rushes, scenes as they were edited in the workprint, and whatever else might have turned up when they went through all that footage? I'd love new featurettes/commentaries from the Rosenbaum, McBride, and Callow as well. There's just no ceiling to what this could be if the Denver boot was removed.

Netflix licenses to Criterion have largely dried up outside of Mudbound and Pinocchio, I don’t have much hope for future ones

There is an astronomical amount of extras that this could have. It would be amazing to have the 45ish minute rough cut that is on backchannels. This is what DP Gary Graver showed to George Lucas (being an idiot, I’m not surprised that he dismissed it) and Clint Eastwood (who just wanted it for research while making White Hunter, Black Heart).

One of the great gems on Netflix that I’m surprised hasn’t been licensed is Sandi Tan’s Shirkers. They really want to release more films from women of colour, and it’s just stunning

True. We never got Mank, which seemed like a given. I'm glad I picked up an FYC BD of that one on eBay.
