Default Speaker placement question for surrounds.

Question about speaker placement These are the ones I will be working with
http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/rs-62-overview/
My question is I have seen people with Surrounds right next to their sofa right on stands. Then I have seen some that are high up mounted on the wall which way is it supposed to be?

Do a search and you will come up with a wealth of info from this message board. I have mine 2-1/2 to 3 feet above ear level when sitting on the couch and just outside of the perimiter of my ENORMOUS secional. Remember to try and keep the surround sound ATMOSPHERIC. I don't understand those folks who have their surrounds right next to their couches on those little stands firing right into their ears.

Sometimes they may not have much of a choice, but I agree that it is certainly not an optimum placement position.

I am in this scenario....I have no accessible wall to my right when watching TV, so I use "stands" for my surrounds and I even moved my wife's desk behind me to allow for rear surrounds. Not optimal by any means, but I think few of us have optimal space for our HT's. The sound is good to my ears, and ultimately, that's all that matters....

+1. With my 7.2 set-up, the only place right now for my Surrounds is on the 2 end tables, with the Rear Surrounds being above me on the back wall as I can't move the couch out to put those "Behind" me. Eventually I'll prob. be getting bipole & dipoles for the Side walls & Rear wall which should make it sound that much better.

If right next to your head on a stand or table is the only space you have, and that's true for many of us, then lower the speaker level for those speakers so that it's not overpowering of the fronts and it's not hurting your ears. That's what the speaker levels are for; to make individual channel/speaker level/intensity changes taking into account for things like distance from your skull!

Ditto, and this was the primary reason I bought my SPL meter....to achieve the proper balance.

Do these speakers have to be flush against a wall or can I use a ceiling mount.

My couch is up against rear wall. Should I mount my rear surround speakers facing the couch, or facing front of room?

IMO, if you can, I would place them out away and then up about 1-2 feet or so from your left and right, and then angle them in and down a bit off of the back wall. I think this would be your best bet with this kind of set-up.....

Those are excellent surround speakers IMO. I have the same ones myself. The great thing about bipoles is they allow a great deal of flexibility in positioning them. They will work well on side walls or a rear wall. I would recommend you try to observe the height recommendations though, and place them a couple feet higher than ear level.

I don't think there's any reason why they have to be flush mounted on a wall. Hanging them from some kind of ceiling mount should be fine. Depending on how high they will be hanging, I don't know if angling them down at all would be beneficial or not. It sounds like some experimentation is in order.

Check out the expert source dolby.com which gives diagrams, spacing for all types of speaker configurations.

Dolby is a good resource. THX is as well, but they advise different things in regards to surround speaker placement. Dolby recommends placing surround speakers "just above ear level" whereas THX recommends "2 feet or higher above the listener".
