the simple answer is no one knows. Back when DVD came out, it was much easier to know what the future would hold. Companies where working on thinner data layers, they where working on blue lasers, HD was here and audio was way too lossy. Even then except for a new HD format everything else was murky. On the other hand, and this is why I think BD will be around a long time, there is no real research in any tech that appears even remotely feasible, there is no obvious directions for benefits that would need something better. Obviously you could say lossless video but that would need a hell of a lot more from the format and a bit less lossy is not a selling point, you could say real 3d but BD can handle it so why a new format, you could say higher resolution but how long before enough people have such SHD TVs....
As for DL, I don’t see it happening. It will be many many years before the internet has the BW for DL BD standard and any new standard needs to have advantages (i.e. beyond the previous one) so it would be many many more years after that for DL to be able to offer more then BD (TO the point of making it sellable), my guess studios/CEs will want to give us a reason to upgrade before such time. |

Perhaps instead of discs. Something like a memory card. Or a flash drive.
This almost like asking, "what will pc's be like 10 years from now"? I dont even what to guess at that. |

Actually u r near correct only not blu rays. The next phase is called, "Holocron" which is holographic picturing......example. U seen how in the star wars movies they communicate? They bring up this small holographic picture up enveloped in light? That is what it supposed to be next. AT least that is what my old boss that works for microsoft said. He said that is what microsoft has been putting money into undercover. I don't know if it's true or not but he said the technology is already there for it but it cannot be released or it will crash the market and that they will wait 10 years b4 they introduce it. That is what he said. I don't doubt him either as if u were to know this guy, he is a freakin' Tech GEEEEEEKKKKKKKK to the second power. SUPER NERD!! And he is some special something for microsoft. He had told me that there was a magazine article talking about the future products and it was in that as well. Don't remember and would love to ask him except i he booted me from the job LOLOL.
N E 1 heard of this? Blu ray will be around for 10 years at LEAST, the market would not survive with something new, especially since it's not even a main stream item in every house hold like the vcr was or the dvd was. Blu rays will get bigger storage wise and all that but it will be around til it's boring. |

I think Solid State discs will be the next thing.
Flash SSD's in the 1TB range (I think 256GB is the largest available right now) for uncompressed audio and video. They will eventually get smaller in size and more in line with the size we are used to with CD/DVD/BD's. Besides, right now, they would probably be about the size of a BD case. Another option could be Compact Flash cards. They can easily be had at the 32GB size with 64GB and above becoming more common in the future. |

Uncompressed video is unlikely as the benefits would be minimal and the cost to produce would be through the roof. I'm talking multiple TB per movie. Frankly though, I'd say that Blu-ray's adaptability that DVD lacks makes it less prone to being overcome by a new format. 3-D and Quad HD are the things on the horizon and the BD standard can be changed to support them. The BDA is apparently going to work on getting a profile for 3D ready, before there is even a broadcast standard or even hardware standard. I think it's great though, if they can put true stereoscopic 3-D on disc to "future-proof" it for when 3D TVs do come, in the mean time, they can just design players to convert it to anaglyph before sending it to the TV. Much better than hardcoding anaglyph into it, and using up disc space on a second full copy of the movie. |

I think BD is the last mainstream optical disc format.
They could maybe be some super-BD disc with 4K or 8K for the real enthusiasts. But most people with a smaller than 60inch TV will think it's overkill and it will never be more than a niche format with VERY limited number of titles available. Blu-ray will be the main format for quality concious people in the next 10-20 years. At least. Sooner or later download/streaming will be the norm. I think DVD vill gradually be replaced by DL. BD quality will be harder to do with downloads. I doubt if the internet infrastructure is ready for that. Imagine if everyone started to stream FullHD + lossless 5.1 ![]() And far from everyone has access to fast broadband yet. It varies from country to country and between the city and the lesser populated areas. Even if it's impossible to say when, DL will of course replace BD too. An advantage with DL is that it will probably be easier to offer different qualities and resolutions when you're not limited to a standard that's dictated by a physical disc format. If your 100inch OLED-TV is compatible with 8K resolution files ![]() |

Physical media will always exist as long as people want it. Books, CDs, and even packaged video games are technologically obsolete, but people still prefer them in many cases. Some people hate having to physically have a place for all of their media, but they're far from the majority. And actually, the only reason MP3 has taken off so heartily is because MP3s in a MP3 player are a lot more portable than a portable disc player and a BUNCH of CDs (well that and pirating of course). And music should be portable. But movies? Should movies be portable? Sure, for some, but should the dominant form for movies be chosen based on its portability? As we move into the next stage of television history in digital and HD, I'd say that quality should be a higher priority than portability. |

I agree as well. I've already got so many movies in both DVD and blu-ray. Some even on VHS still. Need to clear out the way. I think it's safe to say that Blu-ray will be around for a long time. DVD will still be around for at least 5 more years.

I had my thread similar to this shut down...don't know why.
Anyways, there's no doubt in my mind, physical media is almost dead. 1080p will live on, but spinning disks are a waste of time. Cassette's were replaced by Cds. Cd's are being replaced by data. Same thing goes for DVD's and BDR. Just a matter of time. Flash and solid state drives or variations there of are the future. They'll easily handle new media formats. |
