I don't know if "replace" is the right word for what you're referring to. For example, one might say that MP3 has replaced CDs, but they still make CDs and still sell plenty of them.

Physical media will always exist as long as people want it. Books, CDs, and even packaged video games are technologically obsolete, but people still prefer them in many cases. Some people hate having to physically have a place for all of their media, but they're far from the majority.

And actually, the only reason MP3 has taken off so heartily is because MP3s in a MP3 player are a lot more portable than a portable disc player and a BUNCH of CDs (well that and pirating of course). And music should be portable. But movies? Should movies be portable? Sure, for some, but should the dominant form for movies be chosen based on its portability? As we move into the next stage of television history in digital and HD, I'd say that quality should be a higher priority than portability.
