Only the first one would apply to you and it could be handled by asking the seller that they for sure won't wipe it before shipping it. Just saying.

ok but you said that was why you personally didn't get an Xbox. But you said you would buy a PS5 if there was a hypothetical one time activation, and as I just went through that's the same thing, for an aware and careful user such as yourself, as the Xbox issue as long as you ask the seller to confirm they won't wipe it before it ships lol.

I only wouldn't have a problem with a one-time online activation if it was impossible to put the system in a state that needed to be activated again. Xbox One and Xbox Series X are extremely easy to put into a state that needs to be re-activated online and that's why I won't buy them. Plenty of Xbox consoles will become bricks after Microsoft ends support. If Sony ever releases a console with the same issues then I will stop buying PlayStation as well. |

That stinks of the XBSX/S can easily be set to a setting that requires them to be reconnected online again each time. What a pain that would be if internet ever went down or was fragile/weak.
PS5, on launch day November 2020, mine was a brick pretty much until I updated it online. Before that, I tried playing games PS4 and PS5, and it kept telling me that in order to play any games, I must update the PS5. Once that was done, the games thankfully worked, but it was the very first console in my entire history of gaming that required updating a console in order to play a single game or even watch a movie disc. That was terrible but I hear the newer consoles have updates already installed to avoid that to a degree if true. In other news, Best Buy, starting in January 2024, is completely discontinuing all support for disc movies in store and online, but said they'll continue to support disc gaming in their stores and online apparently. That stinks they're dropping all movie disc support. Reminds me of the days of CDs. |

Just to clarify: the issue on Xbox One and Xbox Series X is that there are no offline profiles. That means that after Microsoft ends support if someone deletes their profile (which is linked to their personal e-mail address) before selling the system or if someone deletes someone else's profile after they buy the system they will be unable to make another one.
Deleting profiles with personal information on them before transfer of ownership is a perfectly logical thing to do but in this case it will turn the console into a brick. No one should be able to break their console by doing something logical. It also means that even if you are careful if you happen to buy a system that only has one profile on it you will be unable to play local multiplayer. There are also some games that tie progress to your profile instead of just save files. You won't be able to restart those games if you can't make another profile. If it was just a one-time firmware update that couldn't be undone I wouldn't have a problem with it but the online requirement with Xbox One and Xbox Series X is much more severe. |

When Microsoft stops supporting the Xbox One and Xbox Series X the act of wiping a machine or deleting a profile will make the console completely unusable because there will be no way to download a profile on to the system. |

PS3, had a Sony PS3 console required update (so it would allow my console to play a specific blu ray 3D disc) that literally almost bricked/disabled completely my PS3. It was updating, and stalled at 99%, ending up in a constant, endless loop and all menus were gone, no access to anything but the update screen. I had to use a computer to install the update on a USB stick, then mess with it after 39 or so attempts till it finally gave the update USB a chance to reinstall it. Total near disaster and my PS3 was working fine for years. For PS4, the internal clock was said to go out of sync eventually when the clock battery dies in the future, and games would become inaccessible due to trophies linked online or some BS. Sony thankfully finally fixed it in an update years later, but those who don't update might have problems. For PS5, right out of the box in November 2020, I put in the Miles Morales game, and it said please update your console. Same for PS4 games and disc movies. The PS5 was pretty much a useless menu till I was forced to update it. PS2, can't reliably play most blue bottom discs, as the reader lens eventually wears out or something from just general use. All my discs were clean and I kept the tray closed, but unless the disc bottom is clear/shiny/reflective, PS2 is garbage for reading discs. "Disc Read Error". I have a box full of games it can't play unless I flip my PS2 upside down and then it might play the disc. PS1, I gave that away to a relative as every single game, the console was overheating and while playing, the game would flicker and all the colors would over-saturate and get dark for 10 seconds at a time, totally distorting the screen enough to mess up your game. Sony, once they get their act together, are generally reliable, but they definitely mess things up due to their lack of thoroughness and planning. And of course the XBox 360, my first and last Microsoft console, was in perfect condition, taken care of respectfully but after only 9 months of owning the console, and kept in an air conditioned room, the red rings of doom appeared while playing Transformers the Movie Game, as the chip set or whatever, melted down from the soldering from the inverted design of the console, and totally bricked my console/ruined it so it wouldn't even start up. It kept showing the 3 red lights and the screen went black or whatever. With MS's free warranty, after the 3rd refurbished POS 360, I traded it in for store credit towards PS3 games instead. And I really liked the console too. My Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, NES, Colecovision and other consoles are still going, no major issues other than sometimes not reading a cartridge once in a long while till reinserted. On topic, disc games are nice, but it's sad when developers require updates to get it working properly these days. Gone are the days of everything on the cartridge. |

The new PS5 slim may have a similar problem as Xbox One and Xbox Series X due to needing to go online to pair the Blu-ray drive with the system. If the pairing can be undone by a factory reset then the system will easily be able to be put into a useless state after Sony's support has ended.
Hopefully a factory reset doesn't undo the Blu-ray drive pairing. |

This means that when the CMOS battery runs out (not if), and Sony shuts their TIME servers down, literally *all* DLC and downloaded content *will not work anymore*. Yes, Sony was stupid or evil enough to require an up to date accurate date on the console, even when the end date of the content is 12/31/9999. This was never patched. They patched the PS4, which had the same issue, but even refused to play discs, but not the PS3. |

Dude I wish all movies and games Ive ever bought had a physical version without an internet requirement. But I don't think that desire constitutes a reason to not get anything digital or anything that has an internet requirement.
