rich, great descriptions by the way, now i have more snake oil to use to describe things...
If you particularly like guitar music, consider these:

Against the Grain by Acoustic Alchemy
Sounds of Wood and Steel A Windham Hill Collection

I use these as reference CDs.

I love Jazz and Blues..... and "Rock" (although that's a wide category)

But the difficulty lies in finding good recordings of "Jam Bands" and certainly the existence of it on Vinyl is scarce.

I think I'm going to peel the plastic off of this Roy Orbison Blu, and give it a spin.... and report back in John's "music" thread.

Regards!

How do we come to a true opinion on our speakers when they sound so different with a change of say amplifier?

I often wonder if i really know what my speakers sound like. I'm onto the 3rd amp and the speakers changed radically each time. It taught me what synergy was, but left me thinking, what do my speakers "really" sound like.

Food for thought?

Great observation. But here's what I can say: the speakers will sound how they're meant to if the manufacturer themselves put an internal amplifier in the speakers-making them active like this

Lightbulb Semantics

A study in semantics is always fun! I agree crisp is a limited term to use. I think of potato chips or how in Ireland or England they are called crisps! I have found over the years that the better the equipment the more open and airy the sound becomes. So open is a great word for me. I like to keep it simple, but that is just me.

I heard a demo disk from this company I am just trying to decide which four cds I want. Here is their link: http://www.mapleshaderecords.com/index.php

+1

If I were asked to describe the sound quality of my audio system, that would fit the description quite accurately.

But the speakers will sound as close how the manufacturers intend it to be. Now that's why you should go for the most Neutral and Linear speakers you can get and have them sound the way you want- by adding components and tweaks that fit your taste

Joms,
I know you love Jazz esp Diana Krall. Hey I'll take you to Jazz clubs and I got some San Miguel beer in the fridge ready for you when you come to Chitown.

John,

I have to disagree with you. According to SourceForge.net, this is the exact meaning of crispy.

CRISPY = Communication per Remote Invocation for different kinds of Services via ProxYs.

This is a picture of Crispy.
