Smile Yay!

This is quite (no, very) exciting - will it beat North by Northwest to become the first Hitchcock on blu-ray? [I guess I could look this up - but I'm too lazy!]

This is a truly remarkable film, and I'll be interested to see how it comes up in HD. My old DVD (which came in a box with 4 other British '30s Hitchcock's for £10) has rather scratchy old picture and poor sound.

Do you have any inside knowledge what sort of restoration has been done, Pro-B?

Well, it's "special edition" and ITV has released few very nice restored transfers on Blu-ray before so I'm sure they won't disappoint us. If they only used higher bitrates for their encodes...

I've been thrilled with Brief Encounter and The Red Shoes - which augurs well for this title.

I did my research after posting - and at October 12 ot would beat North by Northwest by several weeks!

Pro-B, the post you quoted doesn't say anything about blu-ray. Was that info posted elsewhere?

Thanks,
Doug

This is my favorite Hitchcock film (with North by Northwest as #2), so I will definitely be getting it.

It's up there on my list, too - although I eagerly await news on Vertigo which is perhaps my favourite of them all. Hopefully when it comes to Blu-ray Universal will correct some of the indifferent DVD treatment they have given Hitch. Like the 4:3 version of The Birds, for instance?

Do you not find choosing one Hitchcock over another is a bit like choosing which child is your favourite? For example from the other end of his career: I watched Family Plot the other week (first time ever) and loved it.... some crtics sneer at the likes of this and the one with Julie Andrews and Paul Newman (is it Topaz? The cold war one?) but I think they're all endlessly fascinating.

Oooh, I wonder if ITV will have Jamaica Inn in the pipeline....

Sorry for the ramble!

Not really. I guess it comes down to which films I can watch the most often. The plots were very similar in many of his films (man goes on run to prove he is innocent) but I like The 39 Steps because it is basically very simple and straight forward. Robert Donat is oh so very good an actor that he brings ease to his part (especially during the inn scene where he tells about his so-called history of crime) and Madeleine Carroll is lovely and is believable when she ends up sticking by him. I also like how it is revealed what the 39 Steps are at the end. North by Northwest has similar elements but there is just something about the entirety of that movie that moves it up on my list of Hitchcock films to #2: Grant, Mason, the cropdusting, Mount Rushmore, Bernard Herrmann...Hitch at his pinnacle. From then on he seemed to go more for horror shock value...Psycho, The Birds, Frenzy.

pro-b,
Is there any chance that we'll be seeing a review for ITV's "The 39 Steps" being released next week?

Pro-B, any chance if you could say now if it is Yea or Nay, so I know to cancel it or not from my Amazon UK order (getting it in the same purchase with Henry V and Hamlet)?

I heard from someone (thank you Julian) who worked on it that (and I quote): "The 39 Steps was in very poor condition - just look at any of the current versions. It's had an awful lot of work on it, but you have to draw the line somewhere. The Blu-ray should be really nice - there's a lot of detail in the transfer, but it had had a lot of wear and tear."
