Criterion's 2015 disc was approved by Roeg. Roeg died in 2018. In 2019, Studio Canal released a Region-B 4K Blu-ray approved by Anthony B. Richmond. That disc was very well-received. Criterion's disc went OOP in 2021. The new 2023 Criterion disc will have the Richmond-approved version.

Given that this is in my top 5 favorite films, the completist in me wants to get the Criterion 4K, but it seems pointless given that I already own the Studio Canal 4K (in addition to Criterion's original Blu-ray release).

Same here, and so far I have resisted. I won't be getting any new extras with the Criterion 4K, already owning their Blu-ray, and the encoding of the new Criterion 4K will almost certainly be worse than the FiM Studiocanal encode...

Not sure how the SC one looks, but the Criterion, to my casual eyes, looks wonderful. Super happy to finally have this on 4k!!

Dr. Svet gave this a 5.0 rating, so I don’t see how it could be a lesser disc than Studio Canal’s. But is there really only one person here who has this disc and has watched it? It’s been out for many days now.

I didn’t really like the bulky 3 disc set. I prefer the criterion version.

I have the set and the lovely steelbook. The best of both worlds! (I also own the Criterion Blu-ray.)

Does anyone else have the audio cutting out on the main menu of the 4k disc? And when you go to subtitles; on is off and off is actually on? Film works fine but the cutting out of the audio during the menu is a pity for a high quality release.

Are you sure you're not just misreading Criterion's woefully ambiguous subtitle menu?

The audio cuts out on the main menu on Walkabout as well (Criterion's recent 4K), although the films plays fine. At first, I thought it was because the disc was scratched, but it did it on two different copies of Walkabout for me.

Same here. Well, the two-disc version. That's why I passed on the Criterion 4K.

Well, I caved and bought this—I sold off my old Criterion Blu-ray and upgraded. I have the standard Studio Canal edition as well, which I am keeping for the bonus features that are exclusive to it. For fans of this film, I think it's worth owning both the Studio Canal and Criterion for the different bonus materials they offer.

So, which is preferred? Studio Canal or Criterion? I've heard so many great things about the former, now can we talk about the latter and how it competes?

As someone who turns on captions for everything I watch, I am baffled by Criterion's ON/OFF selection every time.

Personally, I bought Studio Canal's 4k and kept the Criterion Blu-ray (which I remember getting from Costco way back in the day). The Studio Canal 4k is freaking gorgeous, I was blown away.

Was it ever determined if the BD included with the new Criterion 4K UHD has the previous restoration from the 2015 release or the new one?
