Don't get me started... lol I wish that was the argument we had. But check this out and tell me why I shouldn't go ballistic:
His argument about LOTR (the books) is that Tolkien was "inspired" by the universe to write this story because it happened on Earth thousands of years ago. So he wrote the book by divine intervention, much like the people who wrote the books that now make up the Bible. On The Da Vinci Code he contends that the whole plot IS real, despite giving him evidence(in the form of a Dan Brown interview saying its fiction) on the contrary. What do you guys think? Taking a bit too far or what? |

Lighten up, all of you naysayers. You are so worried about being "cool" that it is a wonder you enjoy anything in life. The only problem I have with fans is when they denigrate other movies, books, or music to pump up the reputation of their own favorite. A lot of that happens on IMDB.
I took a vacation day to see the matinee of Star Wars (1977) on opening day (May 25, 1977) at the AVCO Center Cinemas in Westwood, California. I stood in line for two hours talking with other people before Star Wars fandom even existed. The theater was huge. We were all awed when the Imperial Star Destroyer flew overhead on the screen at the start of the movie. It was a good audience. We laughed when appropriate, cheered when the Death Star blew up, and applauded the end credits. A month later, I saw the same film in a shoebox theater and was a bit bored. Movies like this need to be viewed in a "bigger-than-life" environment. They need a big screen and a good sound system. I now have all six movies on DVD and hope to see them in Blu-ray on my 60" HDTV. I'm not blind to the faults of the films. The two "actors" who played Anakin Skywalker in Episodes I to III just can't act and George Lucas can be bad at writing dialog, especially in love scenes. Jar Jar Binks was annoying. But the bad is balanced with the good. I rolled my eyes when Lucas introduced the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi but I fondly remembered Princess Leia in her bikini. I can understand if some women in the audience preferred the cute Ewoks to Leia in a bikini. The point is that the fan experience can improve your enjoyment. I had never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) when I read about midnight screenings years later in the LA Times. I decided to see it at the Fox Venice theater and it was a blast with some of the fans dressing up as characters and others throwing rice and toilet paper (when an actor says "Great Scott!"). The movie itself is not that great so I only saw it once. I had seen all of the Star Trek TV shows and movies when I saw Galaxy Quest so I got the jokes. My only regret is that I haven't attended even one Star Trek convention although I have see the documentary Trekkies, which makes a great double bill with Galaxy Quest. No, I don't have a Starfleet uniform in my closet. My officemate introduced me to the Harry Potter books. He was trying to bond with his son by reading a chapter each lunch hour. I read enough to know I'd like it so I bought the first book in paperback and enjoyed it. By the time the last book was coming out, I decided to buy it a midnight when all the fans were there. It was great fun. I had never read The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit before news of the Peter Jackson films came out. I bought both books in the summer of 2001 and read them before the first film came out. I saw both the first Harry Potter film and the first LOTR film at the end of that year. Frankly, I needed some fantasy after 9/11, having lost two co-workers and missing my own death by one day merely because of work schedules. I just watched the extended editions of all three films in the last couple of days. The only film I decided not to see in the theaters because of the fans was Twilight. I had read enough about the fans on the internet to know that it was focused on teenage girls. I met a young woman in San Diego who told me it was the next "Harry Potter" phenomenon. I disagreed and told her that while the Harry Potter books could appeal to young and old, males and females, the Twilight books seemed to be only for teen girls and some women. I finally rented the DVD and my suspicions were confirmed. While I liked the location (I've been to Forks, Washington a few times), the "new kid in school" plot, and the Cullen mystery, I threw in the towel at the sparkly vampire meadow scene. Once a scene destroys your immersion in a movie, it's hard to become involved again. I'm not putting the Twilight series down. I'm just in the wrong demographic to be a fan. |

Star Wars. At first it was just the prequels, because they just plain sucked. But now, it's ANYTHING SW, because of the fans. They sit there and defend the prequels and all its carptitude. I don't get it.
The logic that went out the window in that series is explained 1,001 different ways by the fans (like why the jedi didn't 'sense' thecolnes turning on them), b/c they're so scared to admit that George Lucas is not a film god, but rather a shorter version of an idiot who screwed the pooch this last go-round. Other than that, I don't really hear many fans pump up a film to where I get annoyed and want to stick their plastic 'saber where the sun don't shine. |

The media does this with Tiger Woods and Danica Patrick. You are just so sick of the hype, you want to hate them. Though I have no idea why Patrick has hype. |

Somehow you get into talking about the films and end up trying to defend the most minute details or inconsistencies. It's almost a reflex. lol |

I think fanboys or fangirls can easily make you hate movies. The ones I listed, I like most not all. I hated some because I just did not like the movie. Case in point Fight Club and Twilight. Their fans just add fuel to the fire.
As for the guy whose father believed Lord of The Rings happend on Earth thousands of years agon, I am sorry is all I can say.... |

I hated Star Wars for years, because they're so overrated by the fans. I'm not saying they're not fun movies, but they tend to be over-credited with a lot of things & I always thought that the fans made them tough to like.
I stopped liking them, just after high school (2001) and didn't start to come back around, until this year. |
