Wrath of Khan on BD is IMPRESSIVE!

Amazed. A great masterwork. This is was a SPACE SCI-FI MOVIE is supposed to be, not just a "Star Trek" movie.

A fascinating, enthrilling, atmospheric flick featuring a simple but effective storyline. Based on CHARACTERS. Their souls.

I have only two complaints:

1- This movie feels like a "re-start" of the cinematic saga, as it is ignoring ST:TMP. Why is Kirk far from the Enterprise's leadership AGAIN? How much time has passed from ST:TMP? 15 years from the 'Space Seed' episode (2267?) means it's 2282, basically.
I just don't like the way it abruptly ignores ST:TMP and the beautiful ending where Kirk is in charge again, the crew is in charge again, and the new adventure "is just beginning". Got the feeling?

2- Khan should have been fleshed out a bit. More sequences involving him. More backstory. Flashback sequences? Why not. I would have liked more screen time involving his "superior intellect" and his cruel acts on the satellite lab. He's not an average villain. He's not a Klingon. He's a superman. A king. An emperor. They pictured him as being too "wild".


Overall: 8,5/10. Or maybe, 9/10.

The picture quality of the BD is reference stuff, by the way. ASTONISHING, like the movie would have been filmed one year ago. It's an outstanding restoration.

I watched This, the original movie, and search for Spock...... and while this was the best of those three, I thought it was pretty humorous in terms of the acting, and I couldn't help to feel that the actors were far removed from the original series..... I wish they made these movies in the first few years of the original series....

I agree it looks/sounds great, and as far as the lack of character development etc.... I just credited that to me not being terribly knowledgeable about the show.....

I'd be impressed regardless because Wrath of Khan is one of the top 10 sci-fi movies of all-time and definitely my favourite ST film of all-time.

It's the even-numbered blessing/odd-numbered curse...which lasted until Star Trek X (Nemesis), which seemed to make it a full-on curse. Maybe Star Trek XI (2009) reboots that as well.

I don't have the level of distain for Trek III that many seem to. I actually think that II, III, and IV make a pretty good trilogy of Trek stories.

III was definitely the strongest of the odd-number movies.

WELL, hairpiece or not, he is the most beautiful man who ever graced the screen. Bigger than Elvis.

STAR TREK 4 is wonderful.

His hair look the best in part II, by the way.

TWoK have always been one of my favority ST movies and like you said, it's just a great Sci-Fi movie in general.

To answer your questions:
1) Kirk was not in permanent command of the Enterprise. In ST:TMP, he was an Admiral in Starfleet. He got permission from Admiral Nogura to take temporary command of the ship to investigate the V'Ger problem. At the end of the mission, Captain Decker had merged with V'Ger and so Kirk just retained command of the ship on the returning trip to Star Fleet. Spock was only reactivated as Science Officer.

So what happens is that between ST 1 and 2, Star Fleet would have assigned another Captain to the ship and Kirk would resume his post in the Admiralty at Star Fleet. When TWoK came along, we found out that the Enterprise had been used as a training vessel because it's been in service for a long time. We find out that it's over 20 years old in ST 3. Spock became the captain of the ship until Kirk took over as senior officer on board to investigate the problem at Space Lab Regula 1 and found out that Khan had come back.

2) As far as Khan was concerned, TWoK was set up as a sequel to the "Space Seed" episode in the first season of ST:TOS. Because of this, the filmmakers decided to concentrate on developing the action and main story of the movie. The Star Trek fans would already know about Khan's background so there is no need to spend a lot of time on it.

For the mass audience, they did explain briefly about Khan and Khan's motivation when Chekov and Terrell encountered him on what they thought was Ceti Alpha VI. Khan claimed he was a poweful prince 200 years earlier and that Kirk had marooned him and his crew on Ceti Alpha V whose orbit was shifted when Ceti Alpha VI exploded shortly after they showed up. He was seeking revenge for this and the death of his wife from the same Ceti eels that he gave to Chekov and Terrell.

Chekov disputed it explaining that Khan was a criminal and a product of 20th century genetic engineering to produce an enhanced human that is stronger and smarter. You see this with Khan lifting Chekov and Spock's reference that "he's intelligent but not experienced". Khan was sentenced by Kirk because he attempted to kill Kirk and steal his ship. The reason that Khan was "wild" was because he had been living with the rage for 15 years. He is in revenge mode. Thus the movie was called "The Wrath of Khan".

This was enough to establish the character and motive so that the movie can move on. TWoK was an attempt at making Star Trek more interesting since ST:TMP was general looked at as being very slow paced.
