According to IMDb, "The Departed" was filmed on 35mm but released as a 2K digital intermediate. Now the question is, will Warner re-scan the original 35 mm negative, or will they simply give us a lossless HDR version of the existing 2K digital intermediate, similar to what was done for the "Shutter Island" UHD release (Paramount)? I don't recall whether "The Departed" contains scenes with digital effects that are not part of the camera negative and would therefore make the digital intermediate the final master. I could imagine that there are some digital effects during the shoot-outs. IMDb has a dedicated visual effects credits page for "The Departed": https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0407887/f...visual_effects It makes me fear we might only get a 2K master on UHD with this one. In particular since "The Departed" is a relatively recent movie for Warner, so rather a cash cow for which they will want to maximize their profit and minimize their investments. But of course I love the film, so I sincerely hope that this is just fear-mongering from my side and that I will be mistaken...

I loved Aviator, but it’s extensive use of CGi really shows and won’t have aged well.

The Aviator and The Departed were both shot 35mm but had loads of post work + FX shots done digitally and are locked to 2k DIs. Both would probably be upscales from the DIs, though Warner have used filmouts for the Nolan Batmans and Superman 2 The Richard Donner cut.

I care, for one. Shutter Island looks terrible compared to his other 4K releases. The HDR does not do much for that one, that release was very underwhelming. New scans are about a lot more than just increased resolution. Even a newer, more modern 2K scan would be better than a lot of these older masters and it would make the HDR/10 bit that much better.

At the end of the day my point is a 2k DI means nothing really as far as how good a UHD will be. Some of my favorite UHDs ever are 2k DIs. I don't have Shutter Island but I doubt it being a 2k DI is your real issue with it. |
