I finally got around to watching this tonight, after buying it ages ago. Thought the PQ was great

Sorry to revive an ancient thread, but does anybody know of the best place to buy this shipped to the US? It's nearly $40 USD right now on Amazon.fr to have it shipped to the US. I feel like it should be possible to get it much cheaper, but I don't know where else to look.

It seems to be OOP so you won't find it reasonable pretty much anywhere, unfortunately.

Such a shame to find that the HD version on iTunes - which I bought because there's no way to get the Blu-ray any more - has burned-in giant white subtitles that are a third of the height of the 'scope frame, even though there's a subtitle stream encoded in the video they could've used instead.
Ah well, it's the best we're going to get for now. |

Presumably, they just don't think it's worth the effort to bother releasing on BD here, sadly. |

There was a big announcement of Sony Classics licensing the film for the US market, with a limited theatrical re-release set for next week (2/14). Miramax's 20 year US license recently expired, that's why Sony was able to pick up the film. However, unless I missed it, none of the announcements from Sony said anything about a remastering of the film. I'd love a UHD for Amelie, but it was one of the first movies finished as a 2K DI, because of the radically stylized color timing. They can't just remaster it from the negative, there isn't one. They'd need to do one of three things: - upscale the 2K DI (if it still exists in a format that can be read by modern systems, which is unlikely) - Do a 4K scan of the 35mm filmout of the 2K DI, like they did for The Prince of Egypt - rebuild the film entirely, from scratch, like they did recently for The Pianist I would think they'd have announced it if they did one of those. |
