I'll wait for the review before buying, care to share your thoughts after you've watched it?

The most recent BD was a 4K scan I believe, so I'm not convinced it's worth double dipping.

Watched the 2K restoration Criterion Blu-ray about a decade ago, but this will be my first time revisiting the film with the 4K restoration. The caps I’ve seen of the BFI standard Blu-ray look gorgeous, but as I never picked that one up, 4K UHD Blu-ray it is. Really looking forward to it!

My copy is also on the way and should arrive no later than Thursday. Very much looking forward to it. I can’t imagine anything less than a spectacular UHD after all the extraordinary BFI UHDs.

100% of legitimate 4K UHD discs will be an improvement over a Blu-ray. If you’re still not convinced of that, 4K isn’t for you

I'm sure their disc is top notch, BFI never disappoints. I'm not sure the gap between their UHD and their BD is significant enough to warrant double dipping, though.

Looking forward to reading reviews

Terminator 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 1 and so on are so bad the BD is just better. And then there are those which are nearly, if not entirely indistinguishable from the BD, upscaled or not. I have an LG OLED C1 and a Panasonic UB820, so no it's not my equipment.

Granted, those are the minority, but saying 4K is always better is just wrong.

I’ve received my UHD today. FiM-encode, BD-100, DV. Masterpiece release. It’s surreal how sharp and detailed the film looks. Truly a magnificent upgrade even when compared to their most recent BD, which was and is still very good on its own. In my opinion, a must for every collection. Nothing more to be said, it’s that phenomenal in every regard.

What struck me here was how beautiful optical shots can look like if studios and labels protect them from DNR, bitrate drops in the encode or other distorting things we see way too often. The opticals in this film blend in as seamlessly as it can get for the era. Looking at this UHD shows us what the format can and should do - preservation and perfect presentation. BFI did everything right.

Glad to hear it's a significant upgrade over the BD. UHDs seem to be particularly suitable for B&W movies.

Caps?

Disc plays in a locked A player no problems.

Had a flick through it's certainly got the grain intact. Images does look breathtaking for sure compared to anything I've seen before. It looks like a film.

I noticed it's just a 4K disc which is good if it keeps the price down.

Based on those caps, seems the BFI UHD used the same master as the one used for Chinese blu-ray from Disk Kino, which has a different framing of image from the previous BFI blu-ray sourced from the 4K restoration.

Looks a worthwhile upgrade to me! Time to retire the Criterion and BFI release from a few years ago.

From what I understand, BFI used the French 4K restoration by TF1, same as their previous BD.

Yes, it the same restoration but the actual framing for the UHD master is different from previous HD master on BFI. I noticed this after receiving this master for Disk Kino release and asked TF1 about this problem, they confirmed they did two slightly different framing for different masters. The new UHD master they provided was newly done at that time from the DCP, so it has the theatrical framing they did.

Here are two simple comparisons between the previous BFI blu-ray and the new UHD caps from andreasy969, you can get the idea:

(UHD on left, previous HD master on right)

I wonder if the 3 discs that use the 4K restoration of Les Diaboliques have different framing (being the French, Japanese, and Chinese)

Terrible framing on the BFI 4K, actually, done some comparisons. Not the right one, some objects are cut off the frame.
