United Kingdom The Wages of Fear 4K UHD (1953) (BFI)

Coming February 5th from BFI: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CM9HVC...d%2C67&sr=1-27

Quote:
Based on the 1950 French novel Le Salaire de la peur and critically hailed upon its original release, The Wages of Fear propelled its director Henri-Georges Clouzot (Les Diaboliques) to international fame, and is rightly considered a classic of world cinema.

In a squalid South American village, four desperate men are hired by a US oil company to embark on a treacherous journey, transporting a volatile cargo of nitro-glycerine to a massive oil well fire. Friendships and courage are pushed to the limit in this nail-biting thriller by a director who would go on to be dubbed the ‘French Hitchcock’.

  • Audio commentary by film critic Adrian Martin (2017)
  • Interview with assistant director Michel Romanoff (2005,23 mins)
  • Interview with Clouzot biographer Marc Godin (2005, 10 mins)

do we know if the subtitles will be good compared to subtitles on BFI The Seventh Seal? I suspect Criterion will release a 4K too, but likely no HDR

Judging by the thumbnail pic this looks like it'll be a standard Amaray case but the specs list a booklet so I'm hoping that means there's going to be a hardbox like Get Carter.

The "first pressing booklet" tends to mean a standard case with a booklet inside.

Got it. Shame, the film deserves a little better treatment than a standard case. I wonder how they decide what gets special treatment. The Proposition and Get Carter both got great sets.

I mean I wouldnt like to say for sure but generally lables use that phase when the original release is going to be a non box to point out there is some advantage of getting it earlier at release price.

BFI do tend to do quite good booklets along those lines though.

Nice, been meaning to watch the Blu-ray again (especially in light of watching Sorcerer after Friedkin’s passing), but might have to delay that now until this comes out. A little odd that it’s coming out next year, when it would have made more sense to have come out this year to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the film.

Curious how the framing would be, the Disk Kino blu-ray was sourced from a new 4K file provided by TF1 in 2022, the composition is different from the previous BFI blu-ray from the 4K restored source.

Jumped on this! Ashamed to say it’s a blind spot in my movie watching, but rectifying that with a 4K will be great!

Out today, I believe. Anyone own it and watched it yet? I've not seen it but have heard very good things, and I love the director's Les Diaboliques.
