The problem is it's not a permanent one

How is this a "clickbait thread"? The Mainichi is a legitimate news source (it is affiliated with Mainichi Shimbun, one of Japan's leading newspapers), and the entire text from their website is included in the OP.

You can read the entire story in their website here.

Whether this is just an isolated thing at one plant in Japan or a harbinger of things to come, there's really no way to know at this point. But corporations famously never stop trying to cut costs throughout all of their operations.

Don't shoot the messenger!

Because you are fear mongering and using a click bait tweet to do so.

It is just Japan because Japan’s economy is also failing. Further, the Japanese have taken forever to embrace new technology. They still use Fax machines for most communications and cash is used more than credit cards. This article is about recordable media which has nothing to do with pressed & manufactired discs. It may affect MOD discs but not here since there are other companies making recordable media. Japan does not have or offer MOD films on DVD or BD, again due to their market.

The news story says that the cuts will include blu-ray discs, citing sources at Sony.

The OP included the entire text of the original story. If there is something inaccurate about the story, then it's the fault of the people who wrote that story.

Is this the paragraph you're looking at?

I'm not trying to debate anything. I saw a legitimate news story that may have some impact down the line... depending on other factors, I guess.

It's literally the first sentence of the article:

Quote:
Sony Group Corp. will cut around 250 jobs from its recordable media business
Explain to me what the recordable media business has to do with pressed commercial Blu-rays?

The key phrase:

Quote:
optical disc storage media products, including Blu-ray discs,
Storage media aka recordable discs, tapes, and other magnetic media.

In this case, optical storage so DVD-R and BD-R.

Nowhere does it say or confirm manufactured commercial discs will also be discontinued.

I'm not pretending to be an expert here, but I seem to remember that some studios (including Sony itself) are increasingly using BD-Rs for some of the movies that they sell, instead of using pressed discs.

And, again, some studios are already using BD-Rs on some of their titles. Not everything that is being sold by the studios is being put on pressed discs.

I seem to remember in the thread about Sony Pictures Classics, there were numerous mentions of movies that would only be available on BD-Rs.

Sony hasn't released a BD-R film in over five years. They had their Choice Collection which was BD-R, but that stopped a long time ago.

Well, they are definitely using DVD-Rs, according to the thread for Sony Pictures Classics on disc. This post is from last month:

It is for Northern Japan only, Japan does not offer any MOD titles. Their market is still stuck on the rental pricing model. Movies are priced high at first, whatever sells either continues at that high price or a lower priced edition is released later. Whatever does not sell, just goes out of print.

In the US, thanks to DVD, we’ve abandoned the rental pricing model. Which resulted in the $5 Walmart DVD bin because of product overstock. This transitioned to just the $5 bin. As studios decided to not let their products be so undersold and to keep retailers happy, they introduced the Made on Demand programs.

Very few territories offer commercial products on recordable media. It is primarily the US only.

Well, if that is indeed the case, then it would be a big relief for every one of us!

The last paragraph, in my view, is phrased somewhat vaguely when it says "The electronics and entertainment conglomerate will also gradually cease production of..."

I mean, it would feel a lot better if it said "The Tagajo base of the electronics and entertainment conglomerate will also gradually cease production of..."

I would get CD-R if they weren't so expensive now, because I don't trust a computer and digital store to be around forever lol

Wonder how this will effect BD-R MODs though. Maybe they just will stop and press them from now on lol

How many times does this have to be said:

This will not change or affect the US market, it is only for Japan.
