Love this movie. Watched my Blu-ray again a few months ago. Definitely getting this 4K.

For whatever reason I didn't think this suffered with the same low-shutter speed type blurriness on movement that a few other early digital productions seemed to have.

I like my UK steelbook. So I'll probably stick the UHD in that.

One of the films of the century.

It doesn't. The Panavision Genesis was the king of the digital movement blurriness you speak of. Luckily no one uses that camera anymore. This film looks pretty good in that regard.

If anyone wants to read about the use of the Thomson Viper and a bit about the workflow of the movie. Here's a great article.

In case there was any doubt, someone that works for Paramount has confirmed the 4K will be Theatrical only, with the DC being on the Blu-ray

No point then, unless we end up learning the BD is a superior, updated encode. Removing this from my preorder list.

Lame… but expected, sadly. The fact the digital was just the theatrical and the 4K artwork didn’t have Director’s Cut splashed across the cover was a pretty good indicator.

Well that sucks. Might have to abort. While the Director’s Cut is only a slight improvement, the PQ of the Blu-ray has always been incredible. Guessing I’ll just stick with that.

And Team America (2004) and Rango (2011). World War Z (2013) will be next.

Which is reason enoughfor me to stick with my US bluray, then! Such a shame, really! But I'm still curious about the transfer, so I'll keep following this thread. As Fincher apparently was infected by the PJ -JC virus, we can also expect a de-grained transfer of Se7en, next, in which case I'll also gladly keep my ancient bluray, despite the dated VC1-codec....
My viewing pleasure of Se7en to no small extent is based on its gritty appearance , so de-graining just won't do it for me, sorry!

The bluray is by no means looking incredible. Perhaps your memory of it. I made a comparison with the WEB-DL remaster here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=3650 and if you observe carefully you'll notice the remaster cleans up a lot of blemishes with the blu-ray and brings things into focus. Unfortunately, in motion it also becomes clear how the denoising made the image a bit too smooth, so you win some, you lose some. But maybe the disc is going to be a bit better, because of better compression.

The blu-ray might still turn out to be better overall, based on one's preferences, but just look at the comparison, there was room for improvement, for sure.

The US AVC BD-50, with an extras disc pisses all over the international VC-1, lossy audio with extras.

It didn’t click with me that the BD was a Director’s Cut. Six minutes difference, as it looks like the 4K is the theatrical (which I haven’t seen since the cinema).

It’s a shame we are only getting the TC in 4K… Which makes me wonder how much involvement Fincher had (wouldn’t one think he would push for his DC to be on 4K?).

A lot of good insightful scenes in the DC that will be missed. Including the extended black screen news montage.

It's too bad that extra black screen wont be in the 4k version.

Just kidding. I'm more familiar with the DC since I never saw it they year it came out in cinemas so it is a little disappointing.

This is one of the very rare cases where it doesn't really matter if you watch the TC or DC. Both versions are great. It's not like the DC drastically alters the viewing experience for the better. No important info gets lost in the TC. And the pacing is excellent in both versions.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’ve become so accustomed to the director’s cut over the years that watching it any other way just wouldn’t feel right to me. Not including the director’s cut in 4K is just lazy and I’m done supporting lazy studio releases. Besides, the blu-ray still looks f’ing great to me and has MUCH better cover art.
