Default Hellboy II freezing?

I Bought Hellboy 2 last november when it came out and watched it twice since then with no problems, but i go to watch it last night and the damn thing freezes everytime at the part where he tosses the baby up in the air to load his gun (during his fight with the plant thing-a-majig)

There are no scratches on the disc, and it never skiped or jumped or anything before..so what gives? Is this a common occurance... that a Bluray can just all of a sudden freeze even though it never did before?

I use my Ps3 and it has the latest firmware update..i'm stumped as to why this is happening

is anyone else experiencing this problem?

While i haven't watched a complete movie since discovering the freeze, i've spent all after noon trying different sections of several movie and none of them freeze. And the fact that hellboy 2 freezez at the exact same place (as we see the babay get closer to the camera, it just stops) tells me that its a disc issue

Well it is bit strange that it those it at same place everytime but to me it sounds that your PS3 is about to break down. Mine ps3 blu-ray laser broke down twice and this is the first sign of it. Just keep on using your PS3 normaly and it will stop reading blu-ray films and games in do time. If your lucky a clean install(support will tell to do this first) will fix it but with me it never did.

I'm sort of thinking the laser in my PS3 should eventually fail (They do have a rated lifespan and I use my PS3 to watch Blu Rays pretty much every day since I bought it nearly 3 years ago.)

I'm sort of looking forward to changing the laser but when I go through the posted procedure looks pretty delicate too so I'm glad for all the while it keeps on going.

Strange that you only see this at one place of a disc that looks undamaged, but the way it dumps out with that message does sound like the laser is going.

EDIT- I have Hellboy II and the PS3 is my only player... I'll go watch that scene later (tonight... so like 13 hours later) and report back if I have any trouble. You would think Hellboy would melt rather than freeze but then again he's flame-proof so I guess he doesn't melt by definition.

It is NOT a hardware issue,it must be a disc issue ,I have the same problem in the exact spot on Hellboy.I have watched over 50 movies since then on my PS3 with no other problems.

Interesting, i agree that it is probabaly a disc issue, even though i use my PS3 alot for the past 3 years, if the laser was going i think i would see other signs

this is just the same spot on only one movie that locks up..i just find it wiered it never did it before

I had the exact same problem on the exact same scene. The baby in the air and the big plant thing in the middle of the street. No other disc I have freezes like that.

I went out and got a laser cleaner for my ps3 and that was a lot of fun. First the ps3 doesn't recognize the disc so I can't put it to track 3 like it said to. When the disc was in, all it did was spin around, make a terrible noise and then I ejected the thing. I returned the disc cleaner afterwards.

Afterwords I vaccumed the vents on the ps3 and tried to clean it out the best I could. Since then, the movie works just fine and does not freeze anymore.

I guess that section of the disc is crazy for processing or something, there is a lot happening there. I guess a semi-dirty laser could cause it to skip. I'm not a doctor, but I was able to frankenstien a solution.

Get your laser cleaned.

I wouldn't use a cleaning disc but I do vaccuum the vents on my PS3 every few months or whenever I notice it's dusty.

The problem being there is likely something to do with a BD-Live feature or something. (I think there are some pip features with this movie... I'm not sure I usually ignore that stuff.)

You know, a lot of us were having this exact same thing happen on "Baraka" some time ago, but a firmware update by Sony took care of the problem. I realize that you said your firmware is up to date, I'm just wondering if Sony needs to be made aware that people are having this issue at the same point on this disc. Maybe a new firmware update needs to be released.

I'll replace that laser when Hellboy Freezes over!!!!

sorry couldn't resist

seriously I'd play a few movies in thier from start to finish. Just jumping to different scenes on diff movies and only letting them play for a few mins might not trigger a glitch. Could be when it heats up it freezes (counterintuitive of course lol)

what about games do those play well with no stutters or freezes?

the games i have work fine and i've tried about 15 other blurays and none of them freeze (haven't watch the entire movies though just parts) hellboy II just seems to be a little ******* right at that part...i'm also thinking it could be a BD live issue, perhaps it worked fine before but a recent PS3 firmware update made it stop working...if thats even possible, but i know for sure i watched the movie twice before and it never did that

Ok, so just a little update, i did some playing around and discovered that if you turn on U control and select the feature during that scene where you can watch 3 different effects stages of that scene, it overlays 3 screens over the movie but it plays without freezing (for the time being its the only I can watch the entire movie, but U control only needs to be on for that one chapter)

So the fact that it plays fine with U control enabled leads me to believe the freezing is a java problem, and if this is wide spread you think universal would issue an update

well at least i am making progress, i was ready to just go buy a second copy of Hellboy II so i could watch the movie uninterupted... Who knew U control would be good for something

There were a few reports of this issue when Hellboy II first came out. Most people were fine, and a very few had a freeze exactly like you described - those few people were able to exchange their disc, and the replacement worked fine. Universal has had a string of bad disc batches (select copies of Wanted, Serenity, Death Race, and a few others had similar freezing problems), so I figure this is just another manifestation of whatever problem Universal is having.

The only weird thing about your story is that it worked fine previously, but now is freezing. I doubt the disc physically deteriorated in such a short time, so I would guess that either a) your PS3 laser is weakening (seems unlikely given the specific nature of the problem coupled with the PS3 working fine in all other aspects) or b) the disc is defective but not as bad as some, leading it to randomly work or not work at that point in the movie. I really don't think the problem is Java related, as more people would be experiencing problems - a software bug should be present for ALL people using the disc in the same player as you.

I have a 60 GB PS3, and I watched Hellboy II without problems when it first came out. I may watch it again tonight just for kicks, but I don't expect a problem.

I just watched that scene twice (with U-Control totally off) and had no freezing problems - I'm using a 60 GB PS3 with the latest firmware.

If I were the OP, I'd replace the disc (or netflix a different copy) to compare. Most likely, the other copy of the disc will work.
