Default Hurricane Bill

Well gonna hit us here in Nova Scotia as a Category 2 storm apparently on Sunday

Time to move the home theatre out of the basement until its over(just incase)... blah! Suppose to get 150KM winds and 150 mils of rain... YIKES!

Yeah that's what I'm hoping! It's a big sucker though, the wind doesn't worry me as much as the rain. Anything over 100 mm of rains(not sure what that is in inches) you can count on flooding and possible sewer and water system back ups in that short amount of time.

Has never happened to me but with all my toys down there I always get nervous when it comes to heavy rain lol

Thanks for the wishes everyone

I could never live in Florida. I don't know how you people do it. We had the remnants of Ike here in Ohio last year. 60 mph winds were devastating to roofs and trees here. Had my roof replaced because of it.I couldn't imagine winds stronger than that.

Category two is a walk in the park!

Just kidding... I'm sure it's scary for those who haven't been through these things often or ever.

Things I have learned in the many hurricanes I've weathered.... (Frederic, Ivan and Katrina to name a few of the worst.)

Turn your fridge and freezer all the way down and fill them with milk jugs, tupperware bowls or whatever you have on hand that you can fill up with water. Fill up as much empty space as you can with those type things. If you start this the day before... move the frozen fillers from your freezer to the fridge and rotate the non frozen ones to your freezer so they can freeze. Put your most used items in an ice chest so that you don't have to open the fridge. This will help protect your food until power comes back on.... depending upon how long you are without power. I say all this because I'm guessing generators aren't common up there since you don't often have to deal with all this. If you have a generator... don't worry about it.

Fill a bathtub for toilet flushing water and washing up, in case you lose water service.

Pick up everything outdoors that isn't bolted down.

Fill your vehicles with gas, and get some cash in case stores can't run debit/credit cards for a few days.

Make sure you have lots of batteries for flashlights and electronic entertainment.

Cat 2... I wouldn't worry about boarding up any windows unless you have lots of trees with dead limbs..... or neighbors who are too stupid to pick up their outdoor items.

Have some drinks or whatever you like on hand to calm your nerves... but avoid getting tanked in case you have to make quick decisions.

Just relax and enjoy the ride. Hurricanes are actually pretty cool as long as noone gets hurt and your stuff doesn't get damaged

Thanks for the tips!

Yeah Cat 2 is scary just because thats as big as they get here... we had a cat 2 in 2003 called Juan, destroyed everything infastructure wise, trees, power grids... etc... we're not use to hurricanes and now we get a cat 2 every few years it seems. Better prepared now... but I hate to back global warning... but when Nova Scotia becomes a Hurricane destination on a regular basis it makes me wonder

The rain will be the big problem for us and flooding... wind from a cat 2 is about as bad as the winter storms we can get so no biggie, it just doesn't help in the summer when the leaves are still on the trees.

Thanks again I'm sure everything will be ok!

Good luck to you and anyone else in its path.

To someone from my area (south eastern Louisiana) a category 2 is nothing.

I've actually sat on my front porch through a category 1
I love the weather on the outer edges of weak hurricanes and tropical storms/depressions
Very breezy and cool (for the south ) outside and (of course) very overcast.

But for those who aren't used to dealing with these things, and doesn't have building codes and such based on having hurricanes in mind, a Cat 2 is more than enough to be worried about.

Listen to everything robinandtami said and you'll be fine.

In 2002 we had Tropical Storm Bertha, Tropical Storm Isidore, and Hurricane Lili (which hit as either a 1 or 2) Isidore and Lili were pretty much back to back.

Bertha and Isidore were a little east of us, and Lili was a little west (thus causing a lot of flooding around here).

In 2005, we had Hurricane Katrina (obviously) which made landfall as a Cat 3 I believe, but was freaking huge. That was just east of us as well. Then we got Rita around a month later which was west of us (again causing flooding).

This past year we had Gustav and Ike. Gustav made landfall pretty much in my home town (though all the weather channel was worried about was New Orleans ), and Ike never actually made landfall in Louisiana, but it was so big that it covered a good bit of southern Louisiana and again caused a lot of flooding (slightly more than Rita).

We've been lucky and have never had water in our house once, but EVERYONE around us has.

There was also Hurricane Francis and Georges back in 1998 as another 1-2 punch (though they didn't make direct landfall here)

So since 1998, we get a 1-2 punch just about every three years around here.

I rather live in FL than CA. At least we get advanced warnings.

Besides if you live in my city we never get direct impacts from a hurricane. Just the Tropical Storm winds, and heavy rain. No big deal.

For all my blu-ray buddies, please don't venture out and be a dumbass and and get yourself killed trying to go out swimming. There's always that stupid person on the news that goes out and ends up drowning. That's why they give us warnings such as rip currents and NO SWIMMING.

It's official... warnings now in place for Nova Scotia... nice day today, wind is picking up ahead of the hurricane but nice and sunny, may hit the beach but stay away from the water just to stay calm before the storm lol

Then come home and take my stuff upstairs just incase... i don't ever recall getting 150mm of rain in 12 hours so not sure what to expect tomorrow... gotta save my home theatre though lol
