Screened this on iTunes in 4K DV. Hot take is a the film would have been better with Jesse Plemons as the lead, Russell as a secondary/co-lead, a bit more of the Native American influence to balance the degradation/abuse of the environment/society. That and a little more inventiveness and polish to the dialogue along with improved pacing towards the third act would have gone a long way to bumping this up to four stars.
Performances were solid, technicals, including the monster design, were excellent. A worthwhile Wendigo watch but left wanting a bit better. |

Finally got to watch this. Dang.
The trailer is SO good. Russell & Plemons looked bored with this. But to be fair, looking bored is kind of Jesse's whole acting style. But the rest of the actors were great. Especially the kid who played Lucas and the guy who played the dad. How The hell they got Graham Greene I don't know but he should have been the sheriff. The whole subtext about the dad and her leaving... it was just kind of a mess. Plus the whole trope of "Hey, we're in a meth lab inside an underground cave and we just heard an unearthly terrifying noise. Let's walk towards it as the light fades to investigate. With no weapons. With no plan." It's just lazy writing. But great special effects, incredible cinematography, good score... it's a very well made film technically. But it's just boring. Wouldn't even file this under horror. More like a Drama with some horror overtones. 2/5. Last edited by An4h0ny; 02-17-2022 at 01:06 AM. |

I remember kind of enjoying it. But was a little let down. I'll have to give it another watch to make sure.

After pushing this year for 3 years, I finally watched it tonight. It was fairly decent. It looked great. Keri is always great to watch anyway. Overall decent flick with some good scares and gore. Not sure if I would revisit it again since there are so many films to watch this time of year but it was solid
